2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of the City of Buda are gathering |

3 | 3 | | in Austin on February 27, 2019, to celebrate Buda Day at the State |
---|
4 | 4 | | Capitol, and the delegation includes representatives from the |
---|
5 | 5 | | City of Buda, the Buda Economic Development Corporation, the Buda |
---|
6 | 6 | | Chamber of Commerce, and other community businesses and |
---|
7 | 7 | | organizations; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Established as a new depot on the |
---|
9 | 9 | | International-Great Northern Railroad in 1881, Buda was known |
---|
10 | 10 | | as Du Pre until the post office requested a name change seven |
---|
11 | 11 | | years later; one explanation for the unique moniker is that |
---|
12 | 12 | | "Buda" comes from the Spanish word viuda, or widow, and refers |
---|
13 | 13 | | to the two widows who cooked at a local establishment, the |
---|
14 | 14 | | Carrington Hotel, in the 1880s; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The town's early economy centered on supplies and |
---|
16 | 16 | | services for the nearby ranches and dairy farms, and local |
---|
17 | 17 | | businesses formed a chamber of commerce in 1928; the City of Buda |
---|
18 | 18 | | was incorporated 20 years later, and in 1967, its schools joined |
---|
19 | 19 | | the Hays Consolidated Independent School District; Buda's |
---|
20 | 20 | | population began to grow in earnest in the 1980s, and today, the |
---|
21 | 21 | | city is home to approximately 17,000 people; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Designated the Outdoor Capital of Texas by the |
---|
23 | 23 | | Texas Legislature, Buda is located at the edge of the beautiful |
---|
24 | 24 | | Texas Hill Country and is known for its preservation of the |
---|
25 | 25 | | area's open spaces and natural landscape; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Visitors to Buda can enjoy the appeal of Onion |
---|
27 | 27 | | Creek and Buda's pristine parklands, the quaint local shops in |
---|
28 | 28 | | the historic Main Street district, and the community events, such |
---|
29 | 29 | | as the Downtown Buda Farmer's Market; the city's festive |
---|
30 | 30 | | occasions include the Red, White, and Buda Independence Day |
---|
31 | 31 | | Celebration, Boo-da Halloween, and the Buda Fest and Buda Trail |
---|
32 | 32 | | of Lights; other notable attractions include the outdoor shop |
---|
33 | 33 | | Cabela's, the Buda Lions Country Fair, and the Wiener Dog Races |

34 | 34 | | held in April; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of Buda are building on an impressive |
---|
36 | 36 | | tradition of achievement and public spirit, and they may indeed |
---|
37 | 37 | | take great pride in their contributions to the story of the Lone |

38 | 38 | | Star State; now, therefore, be it |

39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
40 | 40 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 27, 2019, as Buda Day at |

41 | 41 | | the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere |
