5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Family and friends will long cherish their |

6 | 6 | | memories of Franklin D. Battles of Tyler, who passed away on |

7 | 7 | | January 14, 2019, at the age of 84; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The son of Marvin and Della Dillard Battles, Frank |
---|
9 | 9 | | Battles was born on September 20, 1934, in Center; he enjoyed the |
---|
10 | 10 | | love and support of his wife, Louise Parson Battles, and they |
---|
11 | 11 | | shared a rewarding marriage that spanned 60 years; he took great |
---|
12 | 12 | | pride in his three daughters and their husbands, Joni and Kevin |
---|
13 | 13 | | Murphree, Juli and Lenny Myers, and Gina and Van Kelley, and he |
---|
14 | 14 | | had the pleasure of seeing his family grow to include seven |
---|
15 | 15 | | granddaughters; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Answering his nation's call to duty, Mr. Battles |
---|
17 | 17 | | served for three years in the United States Army; he earned an |
---|
18 | 18 | | associate degree from Tyler Junior College, a bachelor's degree |
---|
19 | 19 | | in business administration from The University of Texas at Tyler, |
---|
20 | 20 | | and a Ph.D. and several other degrees from Bethany Theological |
---|
21 | 21 | | Seminary; he also completed courses at the Advanced Military |
---|
22 | 22 | | Police Officers School, the United States Air Force Command and |
---|
23 | 23 | | Staff College, the Air War College, and the National Defense |
---|
24 | 24 | | University, among others; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Battles enjoyed a successful 21-year career |
---|
26 | 26 | | in broadcasting, rising from staff announcer to executive vice |
---|
27 | 27 | | president of a multi-station corporation, and he went on to serve |
---|
28 | 28 | | as president of two vocational institutions, including Tyler |
---|
29 | 29 | | Commercial College; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, A man of profound religious faith, he served 28 |
---|
31 | 31 | | years as pastor to three congregations, Pruitt Lake Baptist |
---|
32 | 32 | | Church in Avinger, Good Shepherd Baptist Church in Shepherd, and |
---|
33 | 33 | | Heritage Baptist Church, where he was voted pastor emeritus in |
---|
34 | 34 | | 2012; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Frank Battles lived a rich and purposeful life, |
---|
36 | 36 | | and those who were privileged to share in this esteemed man's |
---|
37 | 37 | | love and friendship will always remember him with great |
---|
38 | 38 | | tenderness and affection; now, therefore, be it |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
40 | 40 | | Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Franklin |
---|
41 | 41 | | D. Battles and extend heartfelt sympathy to his relatives and |
---|
42 | 42 | | many friends; and, be it further |
---|
43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
---|
44 | 44 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns |
---|
45 | 45 | | this day, it do so in memory of Franklin D. Battles. |
