55 WHEREAS, Family and friends will long cherish their
66 memories of Franklin D. Battles of Tyler, who passed away on
77 January 14, 2019, at the age of 84; and
88 WHEREAS, The son of Marvin and Della Dillard Battles, Frank
99 Battles was born on September 20, 1934, in Center; he enjoyed the
1010 love and support of his wife, Louise Parson Battles, and they
1111 shared a rewarding marriage that spanned 60 years; he took great
1212 pride in his three daughters and their husbands, Joni and Kevin
1313 Murphree, Juli and Lenny Myers, and Gina and Van Kelley, and he
1414 had the pleasure of seeing his family grow to include seven
1515 granddaughters; and
1616 WHEREAS, Answering his nation's call to duty, Mr. Battles
1717 served for three years in the United States Army; he earned an
1818 associate degree from Tyler Junior College, a bachelor's degree
1919 in business administration from The University of Texas at Tyler,
2020 and a Ph.D. and several other degrees from Bethany Theological
2121 Seminary; he also completed courses at the Advanced Military
2222 Police Officers School, the United States Air Force Command and
2323 Staff College, the Air War College, and the National Defense
2424 University, among others; and
2525 WHEREAS, Mr. Battles enjoyed a successful 21-year career
2626 in broadcasting, rising from staff announcer to executive vice
2727 president of a multi-station corporation, and he went on to serve
2828 as president of two vocational institutions, including Tyler
2929 Commercial College; and
3030 WHEREAS, A man of profound religious faith, he served 28
3131 years as pastor to three congregations, Pruitt Lake Baptist
3232 Church in Avinger, Good Shepherd Baptist Church in Shepherd, and
3333 Heritage Baptist Church, where he was voted pastor emeritus in
3434 2012; and
3535 WHEREAS, Frank Battles lived a rich and purposeful life,
3636 and those who were privileged to share in this esteemed man's
3737 love and friendship will always remember him with great
3838 tenderness and affection; now, therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
4040 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Franklin
4141 D. Battles and extend heartfelt sympathy to his relatives and
4242 many friends; and, be it further
4343 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
4444 prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns
4545 this day, it do so in memory of Franklin D. Battles.
