55 WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the loss of James
66 Kenneth Smith of Tyler, who passed away on January 23, 2019, at
77 the age of 81; and
88 WHEREAS, Ken Smith was born on September 26, 1937, in the
99 community of Telephone to James Warner and Undene Mozelle Widner
1010 Smith; while attending Bonham High School, he earned the rank of
1111 Eagle Scout and began working as a disc jockey, a job that
1212 eventually helped him pay his way through college in Austin,
1313 Denton, and Dallas; and
1414 WHEREAS, Mr. Smith graduated from the University of North
1515 Texas in 1960 and made his living as a disc jockey in Sherman and
1616 Tyler, before taking a job with Peoples National Bank; in 1963,
1717 he embarked on a career that would span 34 years with the
1818 pharmaceutical company Smith Kline & French; while there, he
1919 became a certified medical representative and rose to the
2020 position of executive pharmaceutical consultant before retiring
2121 in 1997; he was a longtime member of First Christian Church in
2222 Tyler, and he served the congregation through the years as
2323 evangelism chair, elder, elder chair, and elder emeritus; and
2424 WHEREAS, In 1959, Mr. Smith married his college sweetheart,
2525 the former Reba Fay Roland, with whom he shared nearly six decades;
2626 they were blessed with two children, Angela and Timothy, and the
2727 couple later welcomed into their family four grandchildren, Blake,
2828 Trent, Clayton, and Lindsey; Mr. Smith supported both his children
2929 and grandchildren in their many athletic, dance, band, and other
3030 extracurricular activities; an avid outdoorsman, he also delighted
3131 in going on fishing and hunting trips with his loved ones; and
3232 WHEREAS, Ken Smith led a life that was rich in the
3333 intangibles that matter most, and he will forever be remembered
3434 with deep admiration and affection; now, therefore, be it
3535 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
3636 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of James Kenneth
3737 Smith and extend sincere sympathy to all those who mourn his
3838 passing; and, be it further
3939 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
4040 prepared for his family and that when the Senate adjourns this
4141 day, it do so in memory of Ken Smith.
