5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the loss of James |
---|
6 | 6 | | Kenneth Smith of Tyler, who passed away on January 23, 2019, at |
---|
7 | 7 | | the age of 81; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Ken Smith was born on September 26, 1937, in the |
---|
9 | 9 | | community of Telephone to James Warner and Undene Mozelle Widner |
---|
10 | 10 | | Smith; while attending Bonham High School, he earned the rank of |
---|
11 | 11 | | Eagle Scout and began working as a disc jockey, a job that |
---|
12 | 12 | | eventually helped him pay his way through college in Austin, |
---|
13 | 13 | | Denton, and Dallas; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Smith graduated from the University of North |
---|
15 | 15 | | Texas in 1960 and made his living as a disc jockey in Sherman and |
---|
16 | 16 | | Tyler, before taking a job with Peoples National Bank; in 1963, |
---|
17 | 17 | | he embarked on a career that would span 34 years with the |
---|
18 | 18 | | pharmaceutical company Smith Kline & French; while there, he |
---|
19 | 19 | | became a certified medical representative and rose to the |
---|
20 | 20 | | position of executive pharmaceutical consultant before retiring |
---|
21 | 21 | | in 1997; he was a longtime member of First Christian Church in |
---|
22 | 22 | | Tyler, and he served the congregation through the years as |
---|
23 | 23 | | evangelism chair, elder, elder chair, and elder emeritus; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, In 1959, Mr. Smith married his college sweetheart, |
---|
25 | 25 | | the former Reba Fay Roland, with whom he shared nearly six decades; |
---|
26 | 26 | | they were blessed with two children, Angela and Timothy, and the |
---|
27 | 27 | | couple later welcomed into their family four grandchildren, Blake, |
---|
28 | 28 | | Trent, Clayton, and Lindsey; Mr. Smith supported both his children |
---|
29 | 29 | | and grandchildren in their many athletic, dance, band, and other |
---|
30 | 30 | | extracurricular activities; an avid outdoorsman, he also delighted |
---|
31 | 31 | | in going on fishing and hunting trips with his loved ones; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Ken Smith led a life that was rich in the |
---|
33 | 33 | | intangibles that matter most, and he will forever be remembered |
---|
34 | 34 | | with deep admiration and affection; now, therefore, be it |
---|
35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
36 | 36 | | Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of James Kenneth |
---|
37 | 37 | | Smith and extend sincere sympathy to all those who mourn his |
---|
38 | 38 | | passing; and, be it further |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
---|
40 | 40 | | prepared for his family and that when the Senate adjourns this |

41 | 41 | | day, it do so in memory of Ken Smith. |
