1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 285
2	2	WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Navarro County are coming
3	3	together in Austin on March 6, 2019, to celebrate Navarro County
4	4	Day at the State Capitol; and
5	5	WHEREAS, This region of rolling blackland prairie was once
6	6	inhabited by the Ione, Kickapoo, and Comanche, and early
7	7	Anglo-American settlers built a fort on the Navasota River in
8	8	1833; Navarro County was officially organized in 1846 and named
9	9	for Jose Antonio Navarro, a hero of the Texas Revolution; and
10	10	WHEREAS, Corsicana was founded in 1848 as the county seat
11	11	and named after the island of Corsica, the birthplace of
12	12	Mr. Navarro's parents; the arrival of the railroad after the
13	13	Civil War helped Corsicana to become the region's leading center
14	14	for the trading and shipping of cotton, grain, wool, and
15	15	hides; and
16	16	WHEREAS, In 1894, drillers seeking more water for
17	17	Corsicana's growing population struck oil and gas instead,
18	18	leading to the first oil boom and the longest continual flow of
19	19	oil in Texas; since that initial strike, more than 200 million
20	20	barrels of oil have been produced in the county; and
21	21	WHEREAS, Today, Navarro County's multifaceted economy
22	22	revolves around advanced manufacturing, information technology,
23	23	the oil and gas industries, and agriculture, primarily the
24	24	production of cattle, cotton, sorghum, corn, and wheat; and
25	25	WHEREAS, Corsicana is known far and wide for its DeLuxe
26	26	Fruitcake, a creation of the 119-year-old Collin Street Bakery;
27	27	the town is also home to: the Navarro Pecan Company, the largest
28	28	pecan-shelling facility in the world; a Russell Stover candy
29	29	factory; Oil City Iron Works, a foundry established in 1866 that
30	30	produces industrial parts and equipment, with over 7,000 active
31	31	patterns; and Corsicana Bedding, Incorporated, which was founded
32	32	in 1971 as Tipton Manufacturing and is still leading the
33	33	industry, having become one of the most solid bedding
34	34	manufacturers in the nation; and
35	35	WHEREAS, Notable attractions in Corsicana include the
36	36	Lefty Frizzell Country Music Museum, the restored Palace
37	37	Theatre, and Pioneer Village, a re-creation of a 19th-century
38	38	Texas town; in addition, Navarro College boasts the Cook Center
39	39	Planetarium, the largest domed theater in Texas, and the Pearce
40	40	Museum, which contains extensive collections of Civil War
41	41	documents and Western art; and
42	42	WHEREAS, Residents and visitors alike enjoy abundant
43	43	opportunities for boating, fishing, waterskiing, and other such
44	44	pastimes, thanks to the proximity of Richland-Chambers
45	45	Reservoir, Navarro Mills Lake, and Lake Halbert; and
46	46	WHEREAS, Honoring their rich heritage even as they embrace
47	47	the challenges and opportunities of the future, the citizens of
48	48	Corsicana and Navarro County may indeed take pride in the vital
49	49	role their community has played in the story of the Lone Star
50	50	State; now, therefore, be it
51	51	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
52	52	Legislature, hereby recognize March 6, 2019, as Navarro County
53	53	Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation
54	54	best wishes for a meaningful and memorable stay in Austin; and,
55	55	be it further
56	56	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
57	57	honor of this special day.
