2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Citizens of Reeves County are gathering in Austin |

3 | 3 | | on February 28, 2019, to celebrate Reeves County Day at the State |

4 | 4 | | Capitol; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Habitation of Reeves County began in prehistoric |
---|
6 | 6 | | times, with the earliest residents dwelling in rock shelters and |
---|
7 | 7 | | caves in the Barrilla Hills, where artifacts and pictographs |
---|
8 | 8 | | provide clues to their way of life; by the time Spanish explorer |
---|
9 | 9 | | Antonio de Espejo visited the region in 1583, the Jumano Indians |
---|
10 | 10 | | had established irrigated crops of corn and peaches, and farmers |
---|
11 | 11 | | of Mexican descent later prospered in the fertile Madera Valley; |
---|
12 | 12 | | the first Anglo farmers settled in Toyah Valley in the early |
---|
13 | 13 | | 1870s; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, In 1881, the area witnessed the opening of a new |
---|
15 | 15 | | chapter in its history with the arrival of the Texas and Pacific |
---|
16 | 16 | | Railway, and the county was organized three years later; Pecos, |
---|
17 | 17 | | the county seat, attracted colorful characters as a crossroads |
---|
18 | 18 | | for both cattle trails and railroads, and its frontier days saw |
---|
19 | 19 | | several infamous gunfights; a roping and riding competition |
---|
20 | 20 | | staged on the Fourth of July in 1883 launched what is now the West |
---|
21 | 21 | | of the Pecos Rodeo, which marked its 135th anniversary in June |
---|
22 | 22 | | 2018; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Ranching and farming remain critical components |
---|
24 | 24 | | of the Reeves County economy; the alkaline soil and optimal |
---|
25 | 25 | | growing conditions produce the Pecos cantaloupe, known |
---|
26 | 26 | | nationwide for its sweet flavor, as well as cotton, pecans, |
---|
27 | 27 | | pistachios,andothercrops;oilandnaturalgasrepresent |
---|
28 | 28 | | another aspect of the economy, while tourists are drawn by the |
---|
29 | 29 | | scenery, including such spots as the spring-fed pool at Balmorhea |
---|
30 | 30 | | State Park, and by the West of the Pecos Museum, which offers the |
---|
31 | 31 | | unique opportunity to explore the rooms of a historic hotel and |
---|
32 | 32 | | saloon; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Rich in Western heritage and natural beauty, |
---|
34 | 34 | | Reeves County can boast of many distinctive features, and its |
---|
35 | 35 | | citizens may take justifiable pride in the important role their |
---|
36 | 36 | | unique region continues to play in the story of the Lone Star |
---|
37 | 37 | | State; now, therefore, be it |
---|
38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
39 | 39 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 28, 2019, as Reeves |
---|
40 | 40 | | County Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting |
---|
41 | 41 | | delegation sincere best wishes for an informative and enjoyable |
---|
