11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 293
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize Dr. Louis J. "Lou" Goodman for more than three decades
44 of exceptional service with the Texas Medical Association; and
55 WHEREAS, Lou Goodman was born on September 29, 1948; he
66 grew up in Rutherford, New Jersey, where he was a standout
77 football player and wrestler and was nicknamed "The Fox" by his
88 classmates; he learned the value of hard work at a young age in
99 his family's bakery, where he and his siblings worked long hours
1010 along with their parents; and
1111 WHEREAS, He earned bachelor's and master's degrees at New
1212 York University before earning his doctorate in medical
1313 economics from the university's School of Arts and Science; and
1414 WHEREAS, While attending college, he met and married his
1515 beloved wife, Joann; the couple has been blessed with two
1616 daughters, Melissa and Wendy, who are a source of much pride and
1717 joy for him; all three of the women in his life are graduates of
1818 The University of Texas at Austin, thus Lou's favorite bumper
1919 sticker states, "My Money, My Daughters, and My Wife All Go To
2020 Texas"; and
2121 WHEREAS, Dr. Goodman began his distinguished career with
2222 the Texas Medical Association in 1987 by serving as director of
2323 its Division of Medical Economics; he rose quickly through the
2424 ranks, and in 1997, he was named chief executive officer and
2525 executive vice president; under his exemplary leadership, the
2626 association has become the nation's largest state medical
2727 society and has been designated as The Best Medical Society in
2828 America; and
2929 WHEREAS, He has played a significant role in the
3030 association's growth and success and in its steadfast commitment
3131 to the highest of standards and to quality patient care in Texas;
3232 during his tenure, the association has supported protections for
3333 physician autonomy in patient care and was instrumental in the
3434 2003 passage of a state constitutional amendment that created a
3535 cap on noneconomic damages in medical liability suits; and
3636 WHEREAS, Dr. Goodman has held graduate-level teaching
3737 positions with such institutions as Northwestern University,
3838 DePaul University, and The University of Texas Health Science
3939 Center at Houston; he has also been active in a range of
4040 professional and civic organizations, including the Texas Civil
4141 Justice League, the Texas Society of Association Executives, and
4242 The University of Texas School of Nursing Foundation; his honors
4343 include the American Medical Association's Medical Executive
4444 Lifetime Achievement Award; and
4545 WHEREAS, In appreciation for his exceptional service and
4646 leadership, the Texas Medical Association is naming its Austin
4747 headquartersinhishonor;thededicationoftheLouisJ.Goodman
4848 Texas Medical Association Building takes place March 5, 2019; it
4949 is truly fitting that he receive special recognition for his many
5050 contributions to advancing first-rate medical care in our state;
5151 now, therefore, be it
5252 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
5353 Legislature, hereby commend Dr. Louis J. Goodman on his
5454 outstanding leadership of the Texas Medical Association and
5555 express sincere gratitude to him for his many contributions to
5656 this state; and, be it further
5757 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5858 him as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
