1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 293
2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	recognize Dr. Louis J. "Lou" Goodman for more than three decades
4	4	of exceptional service with the Texas Medical Association; and
5	5	WHEREAS, Lou Goodman was born on September 29, 1948; he
6	6	grew up in Rutherford, New Jersey, where he was a standout
7	7	football player and wrestler and was nicknamed "The Fox" by his
8	8	classmates; he learned the value of hard work at a young age in
9	9	his family's bakery, where he and his siblings worked long hours
10	10	along with their parents; and
11	11	WHEREAS, He earned bachelor's and master's degrees at New
12	12	York University before earning his doctorate in medical
13	13	economics from the university's School of Arts and Science; and
14	14	WHEREAS, While attending college, he met and married his
15	15	beloved wife, Joann; the couple has been blessed with two
16	16	daughters, Melissa and Wendy, who are a source of much pride and
17	17	joy for him; all three of the women in his life are graduates of
18	18	The University of Texas at Austin, thus Lou's favorite bumper
19	19	sticker states, "My Money, My Daughters, and My Wife All Go To
20	20	Texas"; and
21	21	WHEREAS, Dr. Goodman began his distinguished career with
22	22	the Texas Medical Association in 1987 by serving as director of
23	23	its Division of Medical Economics; he rose quickly through the
24	24	ranks, and in 1997, he was named chief executive officer and
25	25	executive vice president; under his exemplary leadership, the
26	26	association has become the nation's largest state medical
27	27	society and has been designated as The Best Medical Society in
28	28	America; and
29	29	WHEREAS, He has played a significant role in the
30	30	association's growth and success and in its steadfast commitment
31	31	to the highest of standards and to quality patient care in Texas;
32	32	during his tenure, the association has supported protections for
33	33	physician autonomy in patient care and was instrumental in the
34	34	2003 passage of a state constitutional amendment that created a
35	35	cap on noneconomic damages in medical liability suits; and
36	36	WHEREAS, Dr. Goodman has held graduate-level teaching
37	37	positions with such institutions as Northwestern University,
38	38	DePaul University, and The University of Texas Health Science
39	39	Center at Houston; he has also been active in a range of
40	40	professional and civic organizations, including the Texas Civil
41	41	Justice League, the Texas Society of Association Executives, and
42	42	The University of Texas School of Nursing Foundation; his honors
43	43	include the American Medical Association's Medical Executive
44	44	Lifetime Achievement Award; and
45	45	WHEREAS, In appreciation for his exceptional service and
46	46	leadership, the Texas Medical Association is naming its Austin
47	47	headquartersinhishonor;thededicationoftheLouisJ.Goodman
48	48	Texas Medical Association Building takes place March 5, 2019; it
49	49	is truly fitting that he receive special recognition for his many
50	50	contributions to advancing first-rate medical care in our state;
51	51	now, therefore, be it
52	52	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
53	53	Legislature, hereby commend Dr. Louis J. Goodman on his
54	54	outstanding leadership of the Texas Medical Association and
55	55	express sincere gratitude to him for his many contributions to
56	56	this state; and, be it further
57	57	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
58	58	him as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
