11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 298
22 WHEREAS, Dr. Kenneth H. Cooper, the world-renowned fitness
33 pioneer and author of the groundbreaking book Aerobics, is
44 celebrating his 88th birthday in 2019; and
55 WHEREAS, Born in Oklahoma City on March 4, 1931, Kenneth
66 Cooper received his bachelor's degree and medical degree from the
77 University of Oklahoma, and he went on to earn a master's degree
88 in public health from Harvard University; he served for 13 years
99 with the United States Army and United States Air Force, and in
1010 his role as flight surgeon and director of the Aerospace Medical
1111 Laboratory, he developed fitness tests that are still used today
1212 by military organizations, athletic teams, law enforcement
1313 agencies, and schools; he also helped create the conditioning
1414 program for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's
1515 astronaut corps; and
1616 WHEREAS, In 1968, Dr. Cooper shared his fitness expertise
1717 with the general public through the publication of Aerobics, which
1818 introduced both a new concept and a new word into American culture;
1919 promoting cardiovascular health and the prevention of disease
2020 through exercise, this hugely influential book has been translated
2121 into 41 languages, and it has motivated countless people around the
2222 world to take up running, or some other form of brisk activity, to
2323 improve their health; he has since written 18 more books, with
2424 combined sales of more than 30 million copies; and
2525 WHEREAS, Dr. Cooper founded The Cooper Institute in Dallas
2626 in 1970; this nonprofit research and education organization
2727 developed the FitnessGram assessment that is now used as part of
2828 the Presidential Youth Fitness Program in schools across the
2929 nation; Dr. Cooper also serves as chair of six health and
3030 wellness companies, including the Cooper Clinic, where he still
3131 sees patients; having logged more than 38,000 miles as a runner,
3232 he continues to exercise on a regular basis at the Cooper
3333 Aerobics Center; in all his endeavors, he has enjoyed the love
3434 and support of his wife, Millie, his daughter, Berkley, his son,
3535 Tyler, and his five grandchildren; and
3636 WHEREAS, Hailed around the world as the father of aerobics,
3737 Dr. Kenneth Cooper has had a remarkable positive influence on
3838 modern life through his work and advocacy, and he has helped
3939 millions of people live healthier and longer lives; now,
4040 therefore, be it
4141 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
4242 Legislature, hereby congratulate Dr. Kenneth H. Cooper on his
4343 88th birthday and commend him on the success of Aerobics and on
4444 the worldwide impact of the research of The Cooper Institute;
4545 and, be it further
4646 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4747 Dr. Cooper as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
