4 | 4 | | celebrating his 88th birthday in 2019; and |

5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Born in Oklahoma City on March 4, 1931, Kenneth |

6 | 6 | | Cooper received his bachelor's degree and medical degree from the |
---|
7 | 7 | | University of Oklahoma, and he went on to earn a master's degree |
---|
8 | 8 | | in public health from Harvard University; he served for 13 years |
---|
9 | 9 | | with the United States Army and United States Air Force, and in |
---|
10 | 10 | | his role as flight surgeon and director of the Aerospace Medical |
---|
11 | 11 | | Laboratory, he developed fitness tests that are still used today |
---|
12 | 12 | | by military organizations, athletic teams, law enforcement |
---|
13 | 13 | | agencies, and schools; he also helped create the conditioning |
---|
14 | 14 | | program for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's |
---|
15 | 15 | | astronaut corps; and |

16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, In 1968, Dr. Cooper shared his fitness expertise |

17 | 17 | | with the general public through the publication of Aerobics, which |
---|
18 | 18 | | introduced both a new concept and a new word into American culture; |

19 | 19 | | promoting cardiovascular health and the prevention of disease |
---|
20 | 20 | | through exercise, this hugely influential book has been translated |
---|
21 | 21 | | into 41 languages, and it has motivated countless people around the |
---|
22 | 22 | | world to take up running, or some other form of brisk activity, to |
---|
23 | 23 | | improve their health; he has since written 18 more books, with |
---|
24 | 24 | | combined sales of more than 30 million copies; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Cooper founded The Cooper Institute in Dallas |
---|
26 | 26 | | in 1970; this nonprofit research and education organization |
---|
27 | 27 | | developed the FitnessGram assessment that is now used as part of |
---|
28 | 28 | | the Presidential Youth Fitness Program in schools across the |
---|
29 | 29 | | nation; Dr. Cooper also serves as chair of six health and |
---|
30 | 30 | | wellness companies, including the Cooper Clinic, where he still |
---|
31 | 31 | | sees patients; having logged more than 38,000 miles as a runner, |
---|
32 | 32 | | he continues to exercise on a regular basis at the Cooper |

33 | 33 | | Aerobics Center; in all his endeavors, he has enjoyed the love |

34 | 34 | | and support of his wife, Millie, his daughter, Berkley, his son, |

37 | 37 | | Dr. Kenneth Cooper has had a remarkable positive influence on |

39 | 39 | | millions of people live healthier and longer lives; now, |

41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |

42 | 42 | | Legislature, hereby congratulate Dr. Kenneth H. Cooper on his |
