55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Richard Arvin Overton, who died
77 December 27, 2018, at the age of 112; and
88 WHEREAS, Richard Overton was the country's oldest World War
99 II veteran and was an exemplary citizen who took pleasure in
1010 helping others and who had a positive impact on his community;
1111 known for his wisdom, kindness, and affable nature, he was an
1212 integral part of the fabric of life in Austin; he could often be
1313 seen sitting at his usual front porch spot greeting neighbors and
1414 visitors with a friendly smile, and the evident joy he
1515 consistently derived from life served as an inspiration to
1616 many; and
1717 WHEREAS, Richard Overton was born on May 11, 1906, in
1818 Bastrop County, to Gentry Overton Sr. and Elizabeth Franklin; he
1919 joined the United States Army in the early 1940s and served the
2020 nation with distinction during World War II as a member of the
2121 188th Engineer Aviation Battalion; he arrived in Pearl Harbor
2222 shortly after the Japanese attack, and he was soon taking part in
2323 the island-hopping campaign and combat in the South Pacific that
2424 included stops in Guam, Palau, and Iwo Jima; and
2525 WHEREAS, After his military service, Mr. Overton returned
2626 to Texas and built his home in East Austin in 1945; he worked for
2727 a time in the furniture business before taking a position with
2828 the Texas Department of the Treasury as a courier at the Capitol,
2929 where he served under four governors before his retirement; and
3030 WHEREAS, Later in his life, he became famous after being
3131 designated the nation's oldest living World War II veteran, and
3232 he was honored by President Barack Obama when he participated in
3333 a Veterans Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery; he often
3434 made headlines when hosting birthday parties in his front yard
3535 and inviting the public to attend, and much was made of his daily
3636 regimen of cigars and sips of whiskey; in spite of his fame, he
3737 remained humble and continued to help his neighbors by performing
3838 such tasks as trimming trees and cleaning driveways; and
3939 WHEREAS, Admired for his patriotism and beloved for his
4040 warmth, quick wit, and joyful spirit, Richard Overton touched the
4141 lives of many, and his enthusiasm for living each day to the
4242 fullest will not be forgotten by those who were privileged to
4343 know him; and
4444 WHEREAS, He was devoted to his family, his community, and
4545 his country, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured
4646 forever, as well as a legacy of laughter, courage, and service;
4747 now, therefore, be it
4848 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
4949 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
5050 family of Richard Arvin Overton; and, be it further
5151 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5252 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
5353 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
5454 memory of Richard Overton.
