| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | join the citizens of Kenedy County in celebrating March 5, 2019, |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | as Kenedy County Day at the Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Kenedy County is situated along the Texas Gulf |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Coast between Corpus Christi and Brownsville; it has been |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | inhabited by humans for approximately 11,000 years; the county's |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | first inhabitants were tribes of hunter-gatherers, and it was |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | later home to the Coahuiltecan and Lipan Apache peoples; Spanish |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | explorers arrived in the area in the late 18th century and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | established large cattle ranches; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Anglo-American people began settling the region |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | in the 19th century; the world-famous King Ranch was founded in |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | 1847 by Richard King and pioneering rancher Mifflin Kenedy, for |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | whom the county is named; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Kenedy County was established in 1921 as part of |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | the reorganization of Willacy, Cameron, and Hidalgo Counties; |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Sarita, which was home of the King Ranch headquarters, was named |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | the county seat; today, ranching and the oil and gas industry are |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | the primary drivers of the area's economy; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Kenedy County draws countless visitors each year |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | for hunting, fishing, and bird-watching opportunities at the |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Padre Island National Seashore; it is truly fitting that a day be |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | set aside to pay tribute to the many contributions the county's |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | citizens have made to the growth and prosperity of our state; |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Legislature, hereby welcome the Kenedy County delegation to |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Austin and extend to its members best wishes for a productive and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | memorable Kenedy County Day at the Capitol; and, be it further |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
