11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 308
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 welcome the citizens of the neighboring communities of Harlingen
44 and San Benito who are visiting Austin on March 5 and 6, 2019, to
55 celebrate Harlingen-San Benito Days at the Capitol; and
66 WHEREAS, Harlingen traces its roots to Lon C. Hill, who
77 proposed the town site be astride the tracks of the Saint Louis,
88 Brownsville, and Mexico Railway; Harlingen was then destined to
99 become a crossroads, and the first train passed through on
1010 July 4, 1904; and
1111 WHEREAS, Harlingen's World War II army air field evolved into
1212 Harlingen Air Force Base, and later, into Valley International
1313 Airport, the region's largest airport; additionally, Harlingen's
1414 Free Trade Bridge provides access to Mexico, and its barge port
1515 connects to the Intracoastal Waterway; and
1616 WHEREAS, The area's semitropical climate, natural resources,
1717 and friendly people have long made Harlingen a destination for
1818 travelers, including winter Texans, birders, and other outdoor
1919 enthusiasts; attractions include the Iwo Jima Memorial, the
2020 historic downtown district with its mural and heritage trails, and
2121 an abundance of parks and sports facilities; and
2222 WHEREAS, The Harlingen Chamber of Commerce was formed in
2323 1919, and it has worked with the city for the past 100 years; its
2424 915 active members maintain a serious commitment to the goals of
2525 the organization and promote business activities throughout the
2626 community; and
2727 WHEREAS, The City of San Benito began to flourish due to
2828 the efforts of such early pioneers as Colonel Sam Robertson;
2929 through the creation of an expansive irrigation system and the
3030 development of a significant railroad system and network, San
3131 Benito contributed greatly to the economic rise of Cameron County
3232 and the Rio Grande Valley; and
3333 WHEREAS, Through the years, San Benito has been an asset to
3434 our state and nation in multiple ways; the city's sons and
3535 daughters have played a notable role in our country's defense
3636 through their service in conflicts around the world; in addition,
3737 San Benito promotes, preserves, and supports the cultural arts
3838 and institutes that generate tourism in Texas; the city is home
3939 to the Texas Conjunto Music Hall of Fame and Museum, the San
4040 Benito History Museum, the Freddy Fender Museum, and the Narciso
4141 Martinez Cultural Arts Center; and
4242 WHEREAS, The residents of Harlingen and San Benito have
4343 developed a regional health care hub that includes the Valley
4444 Baptist Health System, the Harlingen Medical Center, and Muñiz
4545 Rio Grande Pharmacy; and
4646 WHEREAS, Residents of both cities have long understood the
4747 importance of education as a key to the future and have supported
4848 efforts to expand public and private schools; the area's assets
4949 include Texas State Technical College and the Regional Academic
5050 Health Center, which has been an integral part of medical
5151 services and education in the Rio Grande Valley since 1999; and
5252 WHEREAS, The Cities of Harlingen and San Benito are home to
5353 more than 100,000 Texans, and residents proudly embrace the
5454 colorful history of their communities while confidently
5555 anticipating a prosperous future; now, therefore, be it
5656 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
5757 Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Harlingen and San
5858 Benito on their many contributions to the growth and prosperity
5959 of our state and extend to them best wishes for a productive and
6060 rewarding visit on Harlingen-San Benito Days at the Capitol; and,
6161 be it further
6262 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
6363 honor of this special occasion.
