1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 31
2	2	WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Wharton County are gathering in
3	3	Austin on February 12, 2019, to celebrate Wharton County Day at
4	4	the State Capitol; and
5	5	WHEREAS, The county was founded in April of 1846, and its
6	6	name commemorates two heroes of the Texas Revolution, brothers
7	7	William Harris Wharton and John Austin Wharton; located on the
8	8	Coastal Plain of Southeast Texas, it is bounded by Matagorda,
9	9	Colorado, and Jackson Counties and by the San Bernard River,
10	10	which marks its northern and northeastern borders with Austin and
11	11	Fort Bend Counties; and
12	12	WHEREAS, More than 41,000 people call the area home, and
13	13	its nearly 1,100 square miles primarily encompass prairie and
14	14	timberland; the Colorado River, which traverses the county from
15	15	northwest to southeast, divides it roughly in half and flows
16	16	through the communities of Wharton and Glen Flora; and
17	17	WHEREAS, Prospective landowners first came to the plains
18	18	of the Colorado River in 1822, led by Stephen F. Austin under
19	19	contract with the Mexican government; during the time of the
20	20	Republic of Texas, the area consisted of three counties,
21	21	Matagorda, Jackson, and Colorado, containing isolated plantation
22	22	homes and two growing towns, Preston and Egypt; and
23	23	WHEREAS, After Texas joined the United States in December
24	24	1845, Wharton County was formed from parts of the three existing
25	25	counties near the intersection of the mail routes from Matagorda
26	26	to Columbus and from Houston to Victoria; the advent of railroads
27	27	and irrigation brought increased settlement to the area, which
28	28	remains a center of agricultural, educational, industrial, and
29	29	medical services for a large region; and
30	30	WHEREAS, Wharton County's major cities and towns are El
31	31	Campo, Wharton, East Bernard, Boling, and Louise; the county
32	32	seat, Wharton, is known for its small-town way of life and its
33	33	diverse cultural influences from immigrants of Czech, Danish,
34	34	and Mexican ancestry; the city offers outstanding festivals and
35	35	proximity to both Houston and the Gulf Coast, and it is noted for
36	36	its excellent schools and championship football teams; the area
37	37	also provides exceptional hunting and outdoor recreation
38	38	opportunities; and
39	39	WHEREAS, Residents of Wharton County are heirs to a rich
40	40	history and heritage, and they may take pride in their county's
41	41	myriad contributions to the Lone Star State as they look ahead to
42	42	a promising future; now, therefore, be it
43	43	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
44	44	Legislature, hereby recognize February 12, 2019, as Wharton
45	45	County Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the
46	46	citizens of Wharton County who are here in Austin today.
