11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 31
22 WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Wharton County are gathering in
33 Austin on February 12, 2019, to celebrate Wharton County Day at
44 the State Capitol; and
55 WHEREAS, The county was founded in April of 1846, and its
66 name commemorates two heroes of the Texas Revolution, brothers
77 William Harris Wharton and John Austin Wharton; located on the
88 Coastal Plain of Southeast Texas, it is bounded by Matagorda,
99 Colorado, and Jackson Counties and by the San Bernard River,
1010 which marks its northern and northeastern borders with Austin and
1111 Fort Bend Counties; and
1212 WHEREAS, More than 41,000 people call the area home, and
1313 its nearly 1,100 square miles primarily encompass prairie and
1414 timberland; the Colorado River, which traverses the county from
1515 northwest to southeast, divides it roughly in half and flows
1616 through the communities of Wharton and Glen Flora; and
1717 WHEREAS, Prospective landowners first came to the plains
1818 of the Colorado River in 1822, led by Stephen F. Austin under
1919 contract with the Mexican government; during the time of the
2020 Republic of Texas, the area consisted of three counties,
2121 Matagorda, Jackson, and Colorado, containing isolated plantation
2222 homes and two growing towns, Preston and Egypt; and
2323 WHEREAS, After Texas joined the United States in December
2424 1845, Wharton County was formed from parts of the three existing
2525 counties near the intersection of the mail routes from Matagorda
2626 to Columbus and from Houston to Victoria; the advent of railroads
2727 and irrigation brought increased settlement to the area, which
2828 remains a center of agricultural, educational, industrial, and
2929 medical services for a large region; and
3030 WHEREAS, Wharton County's major cities and towns are El
3131 Campo, Wharton, East Bernard, Boling, and Louise; the county
3232 seat, Wharton, is known for its small-town way of life and its
3333 diverse cultural influences from immigrants of Czech, Danish,
3434 and Mexican ancestry; the city offers outstanding festivals and
3535 proximity to both Houston and the Gulf Coast, and it is noted for
3636 its excellent schools and championship football teams; the area
3737 also provides exceptional hunting and outdoor recreation
3838 opportunities; and
3939 WHEREAS, Residents of Wharton County are heirs to a rich
4040 history and heritage, and they may take pride in their county's
4141 myriad contributions to the Lone Star State as they look ahead to
4242 a promising future; now, therefore, be it
4343 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
4444 Legislature, hereby recognize February 12, 2019, as Wharton
4545 County Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the
4646 citizens of Wharton County who are here in Austin today.
