1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 310
2	2	WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Brazoria County are gathering
3	3	in Austin to celebrate Brazoria County Day at the State Capitol
4	4	on March 5, 2019; and
5	5	WHEREAS, This section of coastal prairie along the Brazos
6	6	River was settled in the 1820s by members of Stephen F. Austin's
7	7	Old Three Hundred; Henry Smith of Brazoria served as the first
8	8	American-born governor of the Mexican territory of Texas and as a
9	9	leader of the movement for independence; the town of Columbia was
10	10	the capital of Texas during the first Texas Congress, and in
11	11	1836, Brazoria County became one of the original counties
12	12	established by the new republic; and
13	13	WHEREAS, Farming and ranching initially constituted the
14	14	mainstays of the county's economy; the discovery of oil and sulfur
15	15	deposits in the early 20th century helped the region grow, and
16	16	chemical processing became increasingly important during World War
17	17	II and after; commercial fishing and the recreation industry have
18	18	helped to ensure continuing economic development; and
19	19	WHEREAS, Today, the numerous cities and towns of Brazoria
20	20	County boast excellent schools and affordable housing; visitors
21	21	and residents alike take great pleasure in miles of sandy beaches,
22	22	bay and offshore fishing, scuba diving, outstanding bird-watching,
23	23	and the Brazoria and San Bernard National Wildlife Refuges; the
24	24	county is also home to such attractions as the Nolan Ryan Center and
25	25	the Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historic Site, and the county seat
26	26	of Angleton annually hosts the Brazoria County Fair, one of the
27	27	largest events of its kind in Texas; and
28	28	WHEREAS, The educational opportunities available to
29	29	students at Alvin Community College, Brazosport College, and the
30	30	University of Houston-Clear Lake Pearland Campus further enhance
31	31	the quality of life in the county; and
32	32	WHEREAS, The largest chemical complex in North America,
33	33	the Texas Gulf Coast Regional Airport, and a flourishing health
34	34	care industry are among the major contributors to economic growth
35	35	in the county, and Port Freeport, ranked 19th in the United
36	36	States in foreign tonnage, is one of the fastest-growing ports on
37	37	the Gulf Coast; and
38	38	WHEREAS, The people of Brazoria County take great pride in
39	39	their rich history as they work together to build an even
40	40	brighter future, and it is indeed appropriate to take this
41	41	opportunity to honor them; now, therefore, be it
42	42	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
43	43	Legislature, hereby recognize March 5, 2019, as Brazoria County
44	44	Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation
45	45	best wishes for an informative and enjoyable stay in Austin.
