| 4 | 4 | | celebrate Alpha Kappa Alpha Day at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The nation's first Greek sorority for African |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | American women, Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded as a social and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | service organization on January 15, 1908, by Howard University |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | undergraduate Ethel Hedgeman Lyle and 19 other students; these |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | inspiring women are today known as "the Twenty Pearls"; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, The sorority seeks to cultivate and encourage |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | friendship among college women, to improve the social stature of |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | women of all ages, and to be of service to all mankind; a member |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Alpha Kappa Alpha serves |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | people around the world through the efforts of nearly 300,000 |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | members in over 1,000 chapters located in the United States, the |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | United States Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Germany, South Korea, Japan, Dubai, and Liberia; and |

| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, For more than a century, the group has made a |

| 20 | 20 | | positive difference with its important work in the areas of civil |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | rights, education, economic empowerment, and health care; under |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | the leadership of the sorority's 30th international president, |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Dr. Glenda Baskin Glover, Alpha Kappa Alpha continues to focus on |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | the personal and professional development of its members, on the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | bonds of sisterhood, and on its domestic and international |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | servant leadership; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha has long remained at the |

| 28 | 28 | | forefront of effective advocacy and social change, and its |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | members' efforts have made an important contribution to the goals |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | of equality and equity for all citizens of the world; now, |
|---|

| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
