| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Over the next decade, an estimated 1.5 million men |

| 3 | 3 | | and women will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer, yet thousands |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | of lives can be saved by effective preventive measures; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Most colon cancers arise from slow-growing |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | adenomatous polyps that usually produce no symptoms in the early |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | stages; removing polyps can prevent cancer from forming, and most |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | colon cancers can be cured if detected and treated early; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Medical technology exists that will detect colon |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | polyps and early-stage cancer before symptoms are present, a |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | window of opportunity when curative treatments have the highest |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | success rates; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society recommends that all |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | men and women of normal health begin preventive screenings for |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | colon polyps and colorectal cancer at the age of 50, or sooner if |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | there is a family history of colon disorders; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Initiatives are underway in Lubbock, across the |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | South Plains region, and throughout the state to highlight the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | importance of colorectal cancer awareness, and citizens are |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | urged to take the opportunity in 2019 to discuss appropriate |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | screening options with their health care providers; now, |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Legislature, hereby commend all who are working to raise |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | awareness about colorectal cancer and its prevention and extend |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | to them best wishes for continued success in their outreach |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | efforts in 2019; and, be it further |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | honor of these important efforts. |
