11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 318
22 WHEREAS, Over the next decade, an estimated 1.5 million men
33 and women will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer, yet thousands
44 of lives can be saved by effective preventive measures; and
55 WHEREAS, Most colon cancers arise from slow-growing
66 adenomatous polyps that usually produce no symptoms in the early
77 stages; removing polyps can prevent cancer from forming, and most
88 colon cancers can be cured if detected and treated early; and
99 WHEREAS, Medical technology exists that will detect colon
1010 polyps and early-stage cancer before symptoms are present, a
1111 window of opportunity when curative treatments have the highest
1212 success rates; and
1313 WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society recommends that all
1414 men and women of normal health begin preventive screenings for
1515 colon polyps and colorectal cancer at the age of 50, or sooner if
1616 there is a family history of colon disorders; and
1717 WHEREAS, Initiatives are underway in Lubbock, across the
1818 South Plains region, and throughout the state to highlight the
1919 importance of colorectal cancer awareness, and citizens are
2020 urged to take the opportunity in 2019 to discuss appropriate
2121 screening options with their health care providers; now,
2222 therefore, be it
2323 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
2424 Legislature, hereby commend all who are working to raise
2525 awareness about colorectal cancer and its prevention and extend
2626 to them best wishes for continued success in their outreach
2727 efforts in 2019; and, be it further
2828 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
2929 honor of these important efforts.
