2	2	WHEREAS, The Texas Senate is pleased to recognize March 5,
3	3	2019, as VIVA San Antonio Day at the State Capitol and to welcome
4	4	the visiting delegation from the Alamo City; and
5	5	WHEREAS, The history of San Antonio can be traced back to
6	6	1691, when a group of Spanish explorers and missionaries came
7	7	upon a river and named it San Antonio, in honor of Saint Anthony,
8	8	whose feast day was being celebrated; and
9	9	WHEREAS, The city was founded in 1718 by Father Antonio
10	10	Olivares; he established Mission San Antonio de Valero, which
11	11	would become etched in the annals of history in 1836 as the Alamo,
12	12	the site where 189 brave individuals held the mission for 13 days
13	13	against an army of some 4,000 Mexican soldiers; the cry "Remember
14	14	the Alamo" became the rallying point of the Texas Revolution;
15	15	today, the Alamo is a shrine and museum and is widely recognized
16	16	as the cradle of Texas liberty; and
17	17	WHEREAS, San Antonio became formally incorporated in 1837,
18	18	when the fledgling Republic of Texas granted the city a charter;
19	19	the community retains its sense of history and tradition while
20	20	carefully blending in cosmopolitan progress; it continues to
21	21	serve as a crossroads and a meeting place, where the rich
22	22	cultural influences of Native Americans, Old Mexico, German
23	23	immigrants, the Wild West, African Americans, and the Deep South
24	24	mingle and merge; and
25	25	WHEREAS, Known as Military City USA, San Antonio has a
26	26	proud military heritage; great figures like Pershing, Stilwell,
27	27	Krueger, LeMay, Chennault, and Eisenhower served at San Antonio
28	28	military installations, including Fort Sam Houston, the
29	29	headquarters for the United States Army North and United States
30	30	Army South, and Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, the home of the
31	31	Air Education and Training Command, the Air Force Recruiting
32	32	Service, the Air Force Personnel Center, and the Air Force
33	33	Installation and Mission Support Center; in addition, the city is
34	34	the site of Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, the largest training
35	35	wing in the United States Air Force, which instructs all incoming
36	36	airmen in basic military training, along with vital National
37	37	Guard and Air Force Reserve missions; and
38	38	WHEREAS, The San Antonio Military Health System is the home
39	39	of all area military medical training; its distinguished
40	40	institutions include Brooke Army Medical Center, which houses
41	41	the only Level I Trauma Center in the Department of Defense and
42	42	the Center for the Intrepid, a world-renowned rehabilitation
43	43	facility; and
44	44	WHEREAS, Recent years have brought remarkable economic
45	45	development to San Antonio as its skilled workforce, excellent
46	46	institutions of public and higher education, and high quality of
47	47	life have attracted important corporate businesses and industries
48	48	to the city; and
49	49	WHEREAS, The city's chambers of commerce serve as leading
50	50	advocates for the business community and are dedicated to
51	51	building and sustaining San Antonio's diverse and prosperous
52	52	economy, particularly in the major local industries of health
53	53	care, manufacturing, aerospace, and information technology; and
54	54	WHEREAS, San Antonio has the second-largest concentration of
55	55	cybersecurity professionals in the United States, with a diverse
56	56	workforce and globally competitive cybersecurity ecosystem that is
57	57	strategically organized through CyberSecurity San Antonio; and
58	58	WHEREAS, Millions of people delight in visiting San
59	59	Antonio each year; in addition to the Alamo, highlights include
60	60	La Villita, San Fernando Cathedral, the San Antonio Missions
61	61	Trail, and the famed Paseo del Rio, also known as The River Walk;
62	62	among the other attractions that make San Antonio one of the top
63	63	tourist destinations in the country are SeaWorld San Antonio and
64	64	the Six Flags Fiesta Texas theme park, as well as the PGA Tour
65	65	Valero Texas Open, the Alamo Bowl, and the five-time world
66	66	champion San Antonio Spurs; and
67	67	WHEREAS, In 2018, the San Antonio Tricentennial Commission
68	68	commemorated the 300th anniversary of the founding of the Mission
69	69	San Antonio de Valero, the Presidio San Antonio de Bejar, and the
70	70	City of San Antonio; three centuries of the city's diverse history
71	71	and culture were honored with special events and initiatives
72	72	throughout the year; and
73	73	WHEREAS, The city will once again celebrate Fiesta San
74	74	Antonio, the biggest 11-day party in the state, in April 2019;
75	75	first held nearly 130 years ago, the event was founded by a group
76	76	of women who decorated horse-drawn carriages for a parade in
77	77	front of the Alamo and battled with flower blossoms instead of
78	78	bullets to honor the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San
79	79	Jacinto; and
80	80	WHEREAS, San Antonio is truly one of the treasures of the
81	81	Lone Star State, and VIVA San Antonio Day provides a welcome
82	82	opportunity to honor the city and its many fine residents; now,
83	83	therefore, be it
84	84	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
85	85	Legislature, hereby recognize March 5, 2019, as VIVA San Antonio
86	86	Day at the State Capitol and extend to the members of the visiting
87	87	delegation sincere best wishes for an informative and enjoyable
88	88	stay in Austin.
