11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 319
22 WHEREAS, The Texas Senate is pleased to recognize March 5,
33 2019, as VIVA San Antonio Day at the State Capitol and to welcome
44 the visiting delegation from the Alamo City; and
55 WHEREAS, The history of San Antonio can be traced back to
66 1691, when a group of Spanish explorers and missionaries came
77 upon a river and named it San Antonio, in honor of Saint Anthony,
88 whose feast day was being celebrated; and
99 WHEREAS, The city was founded in 1718 by Father Antonio
1010 Olivares; he established Mission San Antonio de Valero, which
1111 would become etched in the annals of history in 1836 as the Alamo,
1212 the site where 189 brave individuals held the mission for 13 days
1313 against an army of some 4,000 Mexican soldiers; the cry "Remember
1414 the Alamo" became the rallying point of the Texas Revolution;
1515 today, the Alamo is a shrine and museum and is widely recognized
1616 as the cradle of Texas liberty; and
1717 WHEREAS, San Antonio became formally incorporated in 1837,
1818 when the fledgling Republic of Texas granted the city a charter;
1919 the community retains its sense of history and tradition while
2020 carefully blending in cosmopolitan progress; it continues to
2121 serve as a crossroads and a meeting place, where the rich
2222 cultural influences of Native Americans, Old Mexico, German
2323 immigrants, the Wild West, African Americans, and the Deep South
2424 mingle and merge; and
2525 WHEREAS, Known as Military City USA, San Antonio has a
2626 proud military heritage; great figures like Pershing, Stilwell,
2727 Krueger, LeMay, Chennault, and Eisenhower served at San Antonio
2828 military installations, including Fort Sam Houston, the
2929 headquarters for the United States Army North and United States
3030 Army South, and Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, the home of the
3131 Air Education and Training Command, the Air Force Recruiting
3232 Service, the Air Force Personnel Center, and the Air Force
3333 Installation and Mission Support Center; in addition, the city is
3434 the site of Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, the largest training
3535 wing in the United States Air Force, which instructs all incoming
3636 airmen in basic military training, along with vital National
3737 Guard and Air Force Reserve missions; and
3838 WHEREAS, The San Antonio Military Health System is the home
3939 of all area military medical training; its distinguished
4040 institutions include Brooke Army Medical Center, which houses
4141 the only Level I Trauma Center in the Department of Defense and
4242 the Center for the Intrepid, a world-renowned rehabilitation
4343 facility; and
4444 WHEREAS, Recent years have brought remarkable economic
4545 development to San Antonio as its skilled workforce, excellent
4646 institutions of public and higher education, and high quality of
4747 life have attracted important corporate businesses and industries
4848 to the city; and
4949 WHEREAS, The city's chambers of commerce serve as leading
5050 advocates for the business community and are dedicated to
5151 building and sustaining San Antonio's diverse and prosperous
5252 economy, particularly in the major local industries of health
5353 care, manufacturing, aerospace, and information technology; and
5454 WHEREAS, San Antonio has the second-largest concentration of
5555 cybersecurity professionals in the United States, with a diverse
5656 workforce and globally competitive cybersecurity ecosystem that is
5757 strategically organized through CyberSecurity San Antonio; and
5858 WHEREAS, Millions of people delight in visiting San
5959 Antonio each year; in addition to the Alamo, highlights include
6060 La Villita, San Fernando Cathedral, the San Antonio Missions
6161 Trail, and the famed Paseo del Rio, also known as The River Walk;
6262 among the other attractions that make San Antonio one of the top
6363 tourist destinations in the country are SeaWorld San Antonio and
6464 the Six Flags Fiesta Texas theme park, as well as the PGA Tour
6565 Valero Texas Open, the Alamo Bowl, and the five-time world
6666 champion San Antonio Spurs; and
6767 WHEREAS, In 2018, the San Antonio Tricentennial Commission
6868 commemorated the 300th anniversary of the founding of the Mission
6969 San Antonio de Valero, the Presidio San Antonio de Bejar, and the
7070 City of San Antonio; three centuries of the city's diverse history
7171 and culture were honored with special events and initiatives
7272 throughout the year; and
7373 WHEREAS, The city will once again celebrate Fiesta San
7474 Antonio, the biggest 11-day party in the state, in April 2019;
7575 first held nearly 130 years ago, the event was founded by a group
7676 of women who decorated horse-drawn carriages for a parade in
7777 front of the Alamo and battled with flower blossoms instead of
7878 bullets to honor the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San
7979 Jacinto; and
8080 WHEREAS, San Antonio is truly one of the treasures of the
8181 Lone Star State, and VIVA San Antonio Day provides a welcome
8282 opportunity to honor the city and its many fine residents; now,
8383 therefore, be it
8484 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
8585 Legislature, hereby recognize March 5, 2019, as VIVA San Antonio
8686 Day at the State Capitol and extend to the members of the visiting
8787 delegation sincere best wishes for an informative and enjoyable
8888 stay in Austin.
