1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 320
2	2	WHEREAS, Brazosport College is celebrating its 50th
3	3	anniversary during the 2018-2019 school year, and this is a
4	4	fitting opportunity to take note of its outstanding record of
5	5	service to the students of southern Brazoria County; and
6	6	WHEREAS, Originally known as Brazosport Junior College,
7	7	the school enrolled its first 879 students in the fall of 1968,
8	8	and it graduated its inaugural class in 1970, when the name was
9	9	changed to Brazosport College; this venerable institution has
10	10	benefited from the leadership of four presidents, including
11	11	Dr. J. R. Jackson, Dr. W. A. Bass, Dr. John R. Grable, and the
12	12	current president, Dr. Millicent Valek, who has served since
13	13	1996; and
14	14	WHEREAS, Situated on a spacious 156-acre campus in Lake
15	15	Jackson, Brazosport College has experienced impressive growth
16	16	over the past two decades; in 2002, the Corporate Learning Center
17	17	and the Bill and Julia May Children's Center were built, and in
18	18	2005, the music venue The Clarion was added; in recent years, the
19	19	school has seen the construction of the BASF Center for Process
20	20	Technology, the Byron and Sandra Sadler Health Professions and
21	21	Science Complex, the Dow Academic Center, and a new student
22	22	pavilion; moreover, the BCPC Welding Technologies Lab and the
23	23	Freeport LNG Crafts Academy were dedicated in 2016; and
24	24	WHEREAS, Brazosport College received accreditation as a
25	25	baccalaureate-level institution in 2004, and it offers four-year
26	26	programs in industrial and health services management, along
27	27	with two-year degree and certification programs for a wide
28	28	variety of careers; its 300 faculty members serve the educational
29	29	needs of 4,000 degree students each semester and 4,000 continuing
30	30	education students each year, as well as 20,000 participants in
31	31	business and industry training; and
32	32	WHEREAS, The Brazosport College Foundation has done
33	33	outstanding work raising funds for the college, including $5.6
34	34	million for the Building a Legacy Campaign in 2002, $5.5 million
35	35	with the Your College Capital Campaign in 2008, and $3 million with
36	36	the Crafts Academy Capital Campaign in 2015; in 2013 and 2015, the
37	37	college was named a Top 10 Community College in the nation by the
38	38	Aspen Institute, and in 2010, 2013, and 2016, the school was
39	39	certified as a Leader College by Achieving the Dream; and
40	40	WHEREAS, For half a century, Brazosport College has
41	41	remained committed to meeting the educational needs of its
42	42	students, and the school has played a vital role in helping many
43	43	Texans build a bright and prosperous future for themselves; now,
44	44	therefore, be it
45	45	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
46	46	Legislature, hereby congratulate Brazosport College on its 50th
47	47	anniversary and extend to all those associated with the college
48	48	sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
49	49	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
50	50	Brazosport College as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
