2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Jackson County are gathering in |
---|
3 | 3 | | Austin on March 6, 2019, to celebrate Jackson County Day at the |
---|
4 | 4 | | State Capitol, and this occasion provides a welcome opportunity |
---|
5 | 5 | | to honor the history and achievements of this notable area of the |
---|
6 | 6 | | Lone Star State; and |
---|
7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Located along the Gulf of Mexico, this part of the |
---|
8 | 8 | | Coastal Prairie was once inhabited by the Karankawa people, and |
---|
9 | 9 | | it is thought that the early European explorers Cabeza de Vaca |
---|
10 | 10 | | and La Salle visited the area; in the 1820s, a number of the "Old |
---|
11 | 11 | | 300" families in Stephen F. Austin's first colony arrived, and |
---|
12 | 12 | | the communities they founded became known as the Alabama |
---|
13 | 13 | | Settlement because so many of the new arrivals had previously |
---|
14 | 14 | | resided in that state; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The area played a central role in the Texas |
---|
16 | 16 | | Revolution; it served as a training ground for Texan forces and |
---|
17 | 17 | | suffered destruction at the hands of the Mexican Army; after |
---|
18 | 18 | | independence was won in 1836, Jackson County was one of the |
---|
19 | 19 | | original 23 counties formed in the newly established republic; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Cattle ranching and farming became the backbone |
---|
21 | 21 | | of the local economy in the mid-1800s, and these businesses |
---|
22 | 22 | | remain important to the county today, along with rice, corn, and |
---|
23 | 23 | | cotton as prominent crops; moreover, oil and natural gas |
---|
24 | 24 | | production has employed many area residents since reserves were |
---|
25 | 25 | | discovered in the 1930s; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, The town of Edna was established in the 1880s as a |
---|
27 | 27 | | stop on a new railroad that was built through the coastal region; |
---|
28 | 28 | | it quickly eclipsed the existing county seat, Texana, and in |
---|
29 | 29 | | 1883, Edna became the center of government operations; other |
---|
30 | 30 | | communities in the county include Francitas, Ganado, La Salle, La |
---|
31 | 31 | | Ward, Lolita, and Vanderbilt; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Encompassing Lake Texana and Lavaca Bay, Jackson |
---|
33 | 33 | | County is a great place for boating, fishing, and hiking, and |
---|
34 | 34 | | these activities draw many people to sites such as the |
---|
35 | 35 | | Brackenridge Recreation Complex, which includes the Brackenridge |
---|
36 | 36 | | and Texana parks and campgrounds, as well as the Main Event |
---|
37 | 37 | | Center; hunting and bird-watching are also popular, and visitors |
---|
38 | 38 | | can learn about local history at the Texana Museum and Old Jail |
---|
39 | 39 | | House in Edna; and |
---|
40 | 40 | | WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich and colorful history as |
---|
41 | 41 | | they work together to build a bright future, the citizens of |
---|
42 | 42 | | Jackson County may take justifiable pride in the important role |
---|
43 | 43 | | their unique region continues to play in the story of the Lone |
---|
44 | 44 | | Star State; now, therefore, be it |
---|
45 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
46 | 46 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 6, 2019, as Jackson County |
---|
47 | 47 | | Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation |
---|
48 | 48 | | best wishes for an enjoyable and informative stay in Austin. |
