2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | recognize Tammie Jo Shults for her heroic actions on April 17, 2018, |
---|
4 | 4 | | while piloting Southwest Airlines Flight 1380, which departed from |
---|
5 | 5 | | New York's LaGuardia Airport and was bound for Dallas; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, En route, the plane suffered catastrophic engine |
---|
7 | 7 | | failure that jolted the plane and sent metal debris into the air |
---|
8 | 8 | | and cabin, causing rapid decompression and a window to rip open; |
---|
9 | 9 | | Mrs. Shults and her copilot were forced to use hand signals to |
---|
10 | 10 | | communicate with one another because the cockpit was loud and |
---|
11 | 11 | | shaking, yet amazingly, Mrs. Shults managed to remain calm and |
---|
12 | 12 | | used her prior training as a fighter pilot in the United States |
---|
13 | 13 | | Navy to safely land the plane in Philadelphia; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, After the remarkable emergency landing in |
---|
15 | 15 | | Philadelphia, Mrs. Shults walked back to the cabin to personally |
---|
16 | 16 | | comfort each of the passengers, one of whom had unfortunately |
---|
17 | 17 | | sustained life-threatening injuries; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Tammie Jo Shults has had an exceptional aviation |
---|
19 | 19 | | career; she was one of the first females to fly the F/A-18 Hornet, |
---|
20 | 20 | | and she assisted her squadron by serving as an aggressor pilot in |
---|
21 | 21 | | training missions during Operation Desert Storm; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, She was awarded the rank of lieutenant commander |
---|
23 | 23 | | in December of 1995, and she continued to serve in the navy |
---|
24 | 24 | | reserve until August of 2001; she was inducted into the Texas |
---|
25 | 25 | | Women's Hall of Fame in January of 2019; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, In addition, Mrs. Shults is an active member in her |
---|
27 | 27 | | community; she teaches Sunday school at her church, among other |
---|
28 | 28 | | humanitarian endeavors, and she has generously allowed victims of |
---|
29 | 29 | | Hurricane Rita to stay in a cottage on her property; she is known as |
---|
30 | 30 | | a woman who has nerves of steel and who treats others with the |
---|
31 | 31 | | greatest of kindness and empathy; now, therefore, be it |
---|
32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
33 | 33 | | Legislature, hereby commend Tammie Jo Shults for her outstanding |
---|
34 | 34 | | career in aviation and for courageously saving the lives of the |
---|
35 | 35 | | passengers and the crew by piloting Southwest Airlines Flight |
---|
36 | 36 | | 1380 to a safe emergency landing; and, be it further |
---|
37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
---|
38 | 38 | | honor of Tammie Jo Shults and as an expression of highest regard |
---|
39 | 39 | | from the Texas Senate. |
