2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	recognize Karen Thornton, who has been named the recipient of the
4	4	2019 Women of Excellence Award in Education by the YWCA of
5	5	Lubbock; and
6	6	WHEREAS, The prestigious Women of Excellence Award is
7	7	bestowed annually to women in the Lubbock community who have
8	8	excelled in their careers and who have made substantial
9	9	contributions to their chosen fields and to the organizations and
10	10	businesses in the community; and
11	11	WHEREAS, Karen Thornton has served for over 40 years as an
12	12	elementary school teacher, counselor, and principal in Lubbock,
13	13	and she is currently the esteemed principal of Waters Elementary
14	14	School; over the course of her distinguished career as an
15	15	educator, she has demonstrated resourcefulness and enthusiasm
16	16	for her work, and her commitment to preparing young people to
17	17	succeed and thrive in an ever-complex world has been a source of
18	18	inspiration for her students and colleagues alike; and
19	19	WHEREAS, Karen's own education continued throughout her
20	20	career; in addition to her master of arts degree from Texas Tech
21	21	University, she earned a certificate from the Harvard Graduate
22	22	School of Education's National Institute for Urban School
23	23	Leaders in 2009; and
24	24	WHEREAS, Karen regularly spends hours nominating her
25	25	teachers for awards, and many of them have been honored as
26	26	teacher of the year for the quadrant, the district, or the
27	27	region; and
28	28	WHEREAS, The culture of excellence Karen has established
29	29	during her tenure at Waters Elementary School is evident in the
30	30	success of her students, many of whom meet and exceed state
31	31	standards and are recognized for academic achievement every year;
32	32	her students have placed in the Global Finals in Destination
33	33	Imagination for the past eight years and have earned cross-country
34	34	banners that fly high in the school's gymnasium; and
35	35	WHEREAS, Karen's commitment to service goes well beyond the
36	36	schoolhouse; known for her common refrain, "I'll do it," she
37	37	never hesitates to give her time and resources to the community;
38	38	for over 20 years, Karen has served on, volunteered for, or
39	39	financially contributed to countless organizations, such as the
40	40	United Way, the Lubbock Independent School District Council of
41	41	Parent Teacher Associations, the Lubbock ISD Y-Care Advisory
42	42	Committee, the Ronald McDonald House, Westminster Presbyterian
43	43	Church, the American Heart Association, the March of Dimes, and
44	44	Autism Awareness; when needed, she is known to help families pay
45	45	their electric bills or buy tennis shoes for children or their
46	46	family members; and
47	47	WHEREAS, Earning the Women of Excellence Award is a
48	48	capstone in Karen's distinguished and highly recognized career
49	49	of service, during which she has had a profound and positive
50	50	impact on the lives of countless children, parents, and teachers,
51	51	and on numerous organizations; now, therefore, be it
52	52	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
53	53	Legislature, hereby congratulate Karen Thornton on earning the
54	54	prestigious 2019 Women of Excellence Award in Education and
55	55	extend to her best wishes for continued success in all her
56	56	endeavors; and, be it further
57	57	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
58	58	her as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
