11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 333
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize Karen Thornton, who has been named the recipient of the
44 2019 Women of Excellence Award in Education by the YWCA of
55 Lubbock; and
66 WHEREAS, The prestigious Women of Excellence Award is
77 bestowed annually to women in the Lubbock community who have
88 excelled in their careers and who have made substantial
99 contributions to their chosen fields and to the organizations and
1010 businesses in the community; and
1111 WHEREAS, Karen Thornton has served for over 40 years as an
1212 elementary school teacher, counselor, and principal in Lubbock,
1313 and she is currently the esteemed principal of Waters Elementary
1414 School; over the course of her distinguished career as an
1515 educator, she has demonstrated resourcefulness and enthusiasm
1616 for her work, and her commitment to preparing young people to
1717 succeed and thrive in an ever-complex world has been a source of
1818 inspiration for her students and colleagues alike; and
1919 WHEREAS, Karen's own education continued throughout her
2020 career; in addition to her master of arts degree from Texas Tech
2121 University, she earned a certificate from the Harvard Graduate
2222 School of Education's National Institute for Urban School
2323 Leaders in 2009; and
2424 WHEREAS, Karen regularly spends hours nominating her
2525 teachers for awards, and many of them have been honored as
2626 teacher of the year for the quadrant, the district, or the
2727 region; and
2828 WHEREAS, The culture of excellence Karen has established
2929 during her tenure at Waters Elementary School is evident in the
3030 success of her students, many of whom meet and exceed state
3131 standards and are recognized for academic achievement every year;
3232 her students have placed in the Global Finals in Destination
3333 Imagination for the past eight years and have earned cross-country
3434 banners that fly high in the school's gymnasium; and
3535 WHEREAS, Karen's commitment to service goes well beyond the
3636 schoolhouse; known for her common refrain, "I'll do it," she
3737 never hesitates to give her time and resources to the community;
3838 for over 20 years, Karen has served on, volunteered for, or
3939 financially contributed to countless organizations, such as the
4040 United Way, the Lubbock Independent School District Council of
4141 Parent Teacher Associations, the Lubbock ISD Y-Care Advisory
4242 Committee, the Ronald McDonald House, Westminster Presbyterian
4343 Church, the American Heart Association, the March of Dimes, and
4444 Autism Awareness; when needed, she is known to help families pay
4545 their electric bills or buy tennis shoes for children or their
4646 family members; and
4747 WHEREAS, Earning the Women of Excellence Award is a
4848 capstone in Karen's distinguished and highly recognized career
4949 of service, during which she has had a profound and positive
5050 impact on the lives of countless children, parents, and teachers,
5151 and on numerous organizations; now, therefore, be it
5252 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
5353 Legislature, hereby congratulate Karen Thornton on earning the
5454 prestigious 2019 Women of Excellence Award in Education and
5555 extend to her best wishes for continued success in all her
5656 endeavors; and, be it further
5757 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5858 her as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
