6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Special Olympics organization was founded in |

7 | 7 | | 1963 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, who opened a summer day camp to |
---|
8 | 8 | | provide opportunities for children and adults with intellectual |
---|
9 | 9 | | disabilities to explore a variety of sports and physical |
---|
10 | 10 | | activities; in June 1969, the Texas branch of Special Olympics was |
---|
11 | 11 | | established by the association today known as the Arc of Texas, and |
---|
12 | 12 | | its first summer games took place at Paul Tyson Stadium in Waco, |
---|
13 | 13 | | with 10 track and field events and 350 athletes; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, As participation grew, Special Olympics Texas |
---|
15 | 15 | | expanded its competition opportunities; its first-ever winter |
---|
16 | 16 | | games were held in Houston in January 1991, and in 2005, Texas was |
---|
17 | 17 | | among the states selected to run a pilot program for Young |
---|
18 | 18 | | Athletes, a sports play program for children between the ages of |
---|
19 | 19 | | two and seven; in June 2019, the organization is observing the |
---|
20 | 20 | | 50th anniversary of its founding; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Today, Special Olympics Texas hosts more than 300 |
---|
22 | 22 | | events in 22 sports each year, and it has been proud to send |
---|
23 | 23 | | delegates to represent Texas and the United States at |
---|
24 | 24 | | international games in Greece, Ireland, Japan, China, and other |
---|
25 | 25 | | countries; it currently serves more than 58,000 athletes and |
---|
26 | 26 | | relies on the vital contributions of over 40,000 volunteers; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Studies have attested to the myriad benefits of |
---|
28 | 28 | | takingpartintheSpecialOlympics,whichincludeimprovements |
---|
29 | 29 | | in social competence and adaptive skills, work performance, |
---|
30 | 30 | | self-esteem, independence, and physical fitness; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Special Olympics Texas has helped make our state a |

32 | 32 | | place where people of all ages and abilities can enjoy a better |
---|
33 | 33 | | quality of life through sports training, competition, and |

34 | 34 | | volunteer participation, and its outstanding record of service |

35 | 35 | | truly merits wide acclaim; now, therefore, be it |
