11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 335
22 WHEREAS, Over the course of half a century, Special
33 Olympics Texas has enriched countless lives by introducing
44 individuals with intellectual disabilities to the transformative
55 experience of competing in sports; and
66 WHEREAS, The Special Olympics organization was founded in
77 1963 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, who opened a summer day camp to
88 provide opportunities for children and adults with intellectual
99 disabilities to explore a variety of sports and physical
1010 activities; in June 1969, the Texas branch of Special Olympics was
1111 established by the association today known as the Arc of Texas, and
1212 its first summer games took place at Paul Tyson Stadium in Waco,
1313 with 10 track and field events and 350 athletes; and
1414 WHEREAS, As participation grew, Special Olympics Texas
1515 expanded its competition opportunities; its first-ever winter
1616 games were held in Houston in January 1991, and in 2005, Texas was
1717 among the states selected to run a pilot program for Young
1818 Athletes, a sports play program for children between the ages of
1919 two and seven; in June 2019, the organization is observing the
2020 50th anniversary of its founding; and
2121 WHEREAS, Today, Special Olympics Texas hosts more than 300
2222 events in 22 sports each year, and it has been proud to send
2323 delegates to represent Texas and the United States at
2424 international games in Greece, Ireland, Japan, China, and other
2525 countries; it currently serves more than 58,000 athletes and
2626 relies on the vital contributions of over 40,000 volunteers; and
2727 WHEREAS, Studies have attested to the myriad benefits of
2828 takingpartintheSpecialOlympics,whichincludeimprovements
2929 in social competence and adaptive skills, work performance,
3030 self-esteem, independence, and physical fitness; and
3131 WHEREAS, Special Olympics Texas has helped make our state a
3232 place where people of all ages and abilities can enjoy a better
3333 quality of life through sports training, competition, and
3434 volunteer participation, and its outstanding record of service
3535 truly merits wide acclaim; now, therefore, be it
3636 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
3737 Legislature, hereby honor Special Olympics Texas and express
3838 thanks to the athletes, coaches, and volunteers who have made the
3939 organization the success story that it is today; and, be
4040 it further
4141 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
4242 prepared for Special Olympics Texas as an expression of high
4343 regard by the Texas Senate.
