1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 34
2	2	WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Washington County are visiting
3	3	the State Capitol on February 26, 2019, to celebrate their rich
4	4	heritage and the contributions their county has made to the story
5	5	of Texas; and
6	6	WHEREAS, In the early 1820s, members of Stephen F. Austin's
7	7	Old Three Hundred began settling in the area of Washington
8	8	County, and they soon formed a community known as
9	9	Washington-on-the-Brazos; the town became a major center of
10	10	activity during the Texas Revolution, and it was the site of the
11	11	Convention of 1836, where delegates signed the Texas Declaration
12	12	of Independence and drafted a constitution for the new republic;
13	13	that same year, Washington County was formally created, and
14	14	later, from 1842 to 1845, Washington-on-the-Brazos served as the
15	15	capital of the republic; and
16	16	WHEREAS, The region attracted substantial immigration and
17	17	developed quickly; included among the newcomers were Germans,
18	18	Czechs, and Poles, who began arriving in the mid-19th century;
19	19	residents had several colleges to choose from, including Baylor
20	20	University, which was established in Independence in 1846, and
21	21	Soule University, which eventually merged with other schools to
22	22	become Southwestern University; today, that early tradition of
23	23	higher education is carried on at Blinn College, founded in 1883,
24	24	in Brenham, the county seat; and
25	25	WHEREAS, Thanks to its natural beauty and prominent role in
26	26	early Texas history, Washington County is a popular tourist
27	27	destination; visitors can drive down scenic country roads, enjoy
28	28	the recreation afforded by Lake Somerville, and step into the
29	29	past at museums in Brenham, Burton, Chappell Hill, and
30	30	Independence; moreover, the Star of the Republic Museum in
31	31	Washington-on-the-Brazos tells the story of the Texas
32	32	Republic; and
33	33	WHEREAS, Other popular attractions include Blue Bell
34	34	Creameries, an eight-acre antique rose garden, the Downtown
35	35	Brenham historic district, four wineries, a microbrewery, and
36	36	more than 40 bed and breakfast inns; in addition, the area can
37	37	boast of such well-known events as the Washington County Fair,
38	38	which is the oldest county fair in Texas, along with the Burton
39	39	Cotton Gin Festival, the Bluebonnet and Scarecrow Festivals in
40	40	Chappell Hill, and the Brenham Maifest; and
41	41	WHEREAS, This dynamic county is one of the Lone Star
42	42	State's great treasures, and it is indeed a pleasure to honor the
43	43	residents of Washington County as they look forward to a bright
44	44	and promising future; now, therefore, be it
45	45	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
46	46	Legislature, hereby recognize February 26, 2019, as Washington
47	47	County Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting
48	48	delegation sincere best wishes for a memorable and enjoyable stay
49	49	in Austin.
