5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life drew to a close with |
---|
6 | 6 | | the passing of Charles Winfred Snyder Sr. on January 21, 2019, at |
---|
7 | 7 | | the age of 96; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The son of John and Estelle Haddox Snyder, Charles |
---|
9 | 9 | | Snyder was born near Okemah, Oklahoma, on April 19, 1922; he grew |
---|
10 | 10 | | up with four brothers and a sister in western Oklahoma before |
---|
11 | 11 | | moving with his family to the Texas Panhandle when he was 15 years |
---|
12 | 12 | | old; following the attack on Pearl Harbor, he answered his |
---|
13 | 13 | | nation's call to duty by enlisting in the United States Army; his |
---|
14 | 14 | | service during World War II included tours in North Africa and |
---|
15 | 15 | | Italy, and he earned a European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign |
---|
16 | 16 | | Medal with five Bronze Stars for his valorous efforts; he was |
---|
17 | 17 | | honorably discharged from the military in 1945, at the rank of |
---|
18 | 18 | | sergeant; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Snyder was joined in matrimony to the former |
---|
20 | 20 | | Dorothy Johnson on January 31, 1948, and they shared a rewarding |
---|
21 | 21 | | union that spanned more than 67 years; in the course of their |
---|
22 | 22 | | marriage, the couple became the proud parents of four children, |
---|
23 | 23 | | Clifford, Linda, Elsie, and Chuck, and later in life, Mr. Snyder |
---|
24 | 24 | | had the pleasure of seeing his cherished family grow to include |
---|
25 | 25 | | four grandchildren, Rachel, Cecilia, Donnie, and Annelise, and |
---|
26 | 26 | | four great-grandchildren, Thomas, Devin, Lila, and Novi; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Displaying a strong work ethic from an early age, |
---|
28 | 28 | | Mr. Snyder earned money as a child by tending to cotton fields, |
---|
29 | 29 | | and he went on to hold several jobs before striking out on his own |
---|
30 | 30 | | as a paint contractor; in 1952, he and his wife settled in |
---|
31 | 31 | | Marshall, where he earned a bachelor's degree in religious |
---|
32 | 32 | | studies from East Texas Baptist University; after completing his |
---|
33 | 33 | | education, he established another business, Classic Homes by |
---|
34 | 34 | | Charles Snyder, going on to construct more than a hundred classic |
---|
35 | 35 | | homes in the Marshall area; a man of strong faith, he was also an |
---|
36 | 36 | | ordained Baptist minister, and he preached at the First Baptist |
---|
37 | 37 | | Church mission in Jefferson and served as a substitute pastor for |
---|
38 | 38 | | other local congregations; he was a valued member of Central |
---|
39 | 39 | | Baptist Church for six decades; and |
---|
40 | 40 | | WHEREAS, Charles Snyder embraced life with joy and |
---|
41 | 41 | | enthusiasm, and although he is deeply missed, he will forever |
---|
42 | 42 | | remain a vibrant presence for those who knew and loved him; now, |
---|
43 | 43 | | therefore, be it |
---|
44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
45 | 45 | | Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Charles Winfred |
---|
46 | 46 | | Snyder Sr. and extend sincere sympathy to all who mourn his |
---|
47 | 47 | | passing; and, be it further |
---|
48 | 48 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
---|
49 | 49 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns |
---|
50 | 50 | | this day, it do so in memory of Charles Snyder. |
