44 Willis West Jr.
55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Willis West Jr., who died March 1, 2019,
77 at the age of 91; and
88 WHEREAS, Willis West Jr. was an exemplary citizen who was
99 widely respected and admired in his community for his
1010 achievements and his exceptionally generous spirit; and
1111 WHEREAS, He was born on June 18, 1927, in Tulsa, Oklahoma,
1212 to Willis West Sr. and Maggie Spears-West, and he attended public
1313 schools in Oklahoma; and
1414 WHEREAS, He enlisted in the United States Army on January
1515 10, 1946, and he served the nation with distinction as a member of
1616 a reconnaissance car crew, which provides vital military
1717 intelligence to the chain of command; he was stationed at Fort
1818 George G. Meade in Maryland and received numerous awards and
1919 citations, including the Vietnam Service Medal, the National
2020 Defense Service Medal, and the Purple Heart; he received an
2121 honorary medal for governance and leadership at the time of his
2222 honorable discharge; and
2323 WHEREAS, Mr. West was a longtime member of the United
2424 Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America; self-employed,
2525 he secured contracts for businesses and home renovations and
2626 served as a mentor to countless young carpenters; he retired in
2727 1995 as a master carpenter; and
2828 WHEREAS, He also established his own company as a licensed
2929 vendor and sold fresh seafood and produce to small businesses and
3030 area neighborhoods; he was known for giving away his merchandise
3131 rather than see anyone go hungry; and
3232 WHEREAS, Mr. West was blessed with a wonderful family; his
3333 beloved wife of 49 years, Eunice, provided him invaluable support
3434 in all his endeavors; his children, Kevin, Royce, Carnell, Willis,
3535 Diane, and the late Larry, his stepchildren, James, Wayne, and
3636 Kimberly, and his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren were
3737 a source of much pride and joy for him; and
3838 WHEREAS, A devout Christian who practiced his faith in his
3939 daily life, he served as a deacon at Maple Springs Baptist Church
4040 in Capital Heights, Maryland, and was a member of House of Praise
4141 Ministries, and he took great pleasure in listening to gospel
4242 music; and
4343 WHEREAS, Willis West Jr. was a man of strength, kindness,
4444 and wisdom; his forthrightness and his stern yet fair manner had
4545 a profound impact on his family and on all those who were
4646 privileged to share in his life; and
4747 WHEREAS, A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he
4848 leaves behind memories that will be cherished forever by his
4949 family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
5050 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
5151 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
5252 family of Willis West Jr.; and, be it further
5353 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5454 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
5555 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
5656 memory of Willis West Jr.
