5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
---|
6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of Willis West Jr., who died March 1, 2019, |
---|
7 | 7 | | at the age of 91; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Willis West Jr. was an exemplary citizen who was |
---|
9 | 9 | | widely respected and admired in his community for his |
---|
10 | 10 | | achievements and his exceptionally generous spirit; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, He was born on June 18, 1927, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, |
---|
12 | 12 | | to Willis West Sr. and Maggie Spears-West, and he attended public |
---|
13 | 13 | | schools in Oklahoma; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, He enlisted in the United States Army on January |
---|
15 | 15 | | 10, 1946, and he served the nation with distinction as a member of |
---|
16 | 16 | | a reconnaissance car crew, which provides vital military |
---|
17 | 17 | | intelligence to the chain of command; he was stationed at Fort |
---|
18 | 18 | | George G. Meade in Maryland and received numerous awards and |
---|
19 | 19 | | citations, including the Vietnam Service Medal, the National |
---|
20 | 20 | | Defense Service Medal, and the Purple Heart; he received an |
---|
21 | 21 | | honorary medal for governance and leadership at the time of his |
---|
22 | 22 | | honorable discharge; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Mr. West was a longtime member of the United |
---|
24 | 24 | | Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America; self-employed, |
---|
25 | 25 | | he secured contracts for businesses and home renovations and |
---|
26 | 26 | | served as a mentor to countless young carpenters; he retired in |
---|
27 | 27 | | 1995 as a master carpenter; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, He also established his own company as a licensed |
---|
29 | 29 | | vendor and sold fresh seafood and produce to small businesses and |
---|
30 | 30 | | area neighborhoods; he was known for giving away his merchandise |
---|
31 | 31 | | rather than see anyone go hungry; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Mr. West was blessed with a wonderful family; his |
---|
33 | 33 | | beloved wife of 49 years, Eunice, provided him invaluable support |
---|
34 | 34 | | in all his endeavors; his children, Kevin, Royce, Carnell, Willis, |
---|
35 | 35 | | Diane, and the late Larry, his stepchildren, James, Wayne, and |
---|
36 | 36 | | Kimberly, and his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren were |
---|
37 | 37 | | a source of much pride and joy for him; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, A devout Christian who practiced his faith in his |
---|
39 | 39 | | daily life, he served as a deacon at Maple Springs Baptist Church |
---|
40 | 40 | | in Capital Heights, Maryland, and was a member of House of Praise |
---|
41 | 41 | | Ministries, and he took great pleasure in listening to gospel |
---|
42 | 42 | | music; and |
---|
43 | 43 | | WHEREAS, Willis West Jr. was a man of strength, kindness, |
---|
44 | 44 | | and wisdom; his forthrightness and his stern yet fair manner had |
---|
45 | 45 | | a profound impact on his family and on all those who were |
---|
46 | 46 | | privileged to share in his life; and |
---|
47 | 47 | | WHEREAS, A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he |
---|
48 | 48 | | leaves behind memories that will be cherished forever by his |
---|
49 | 49 | | family and many friends; now, therefore, be it |
---|
50 | 50 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
51 | 51 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
52 | 52 | | family of Willis West Jr.; and, be it further |
---|
53 | 53 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
54 | 54 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
55 | 55 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
