| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize Andy Veliz for his outstanding achievements as an |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | educator and a musician; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Andy Veliz is a native of the Rio Grande Valley |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | and a longtime resident of Weslaco; a 1961 graduate of Lyford |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | High School, he earned a bachelor's degree from Texas A&M |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | University--Kingsville and a master's degree from The University |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | of Texas at Austin, and he has enjoyed a long and distinguished |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | career as a teacher and administrator; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, He began performing at the age of five and was |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | soon appearing at venues across the area, notably the Moulton |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | "Ty" Cobb live television show on KRGV; in 1980, he recorded |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | "Lonely Nights Without You," a breakout hit that received airplay |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | on radio stations across the state and led to a tour of Texas with |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | his band, during which he met such famed Texas musicians as |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Willie Nelson, Freddy Fender, and Johnny Canales; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Through the years, Mr. Veliz continued to pursue |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | his musical career while serving as an educator, and he became |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | known as the Singing Principal; he has released four albums and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | been active in a range of professional and civic organizations, |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | including the American Society of Composers, Authors and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Publishers, the Association of Texas Professional Educators, and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | the Weslaco zoning board; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Andy Veliz has had a positive impact on the lives of |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | countless young people, and he has inspired many to explore their |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | talents and to follow their dreams; it is truly fitting that he |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | receive special recognition for his many accomplishments; now, |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Legislature, hereby commend Andy Veliz on his achievements as a |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | musician and educator and extend to him best wishes for continued |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | success in all his endeavors; and, be it further |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | him as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. |
