55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Robert Allan "Bud" Shivers Jr., who died
77 January 8, 2019, at the age of 72; and
88 WHEREAS, Bud Shivers was born on January 21, 1946, in San
99 Antonio, to Allan and Marialice Shivers; the son of a powerful
1010 Texas governor, he grew up in Austin, and he attended Austin
1111 public schools until 10th grade, when he left to attend the
1212 Lawrenceville School in New Jersey; and
1313 WHEREAS, Following his graduation from Lawrenceville in
1414 1964, he returned to Austin and studied finance at The University
1515 of Texas; he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 1968,
1616 and a year later, he was injured in a diving accident that left
1717 him a quadriplegic for the rest of his life; and
1818 WHEREAS, Despite his disability, Bud Shivers displayed
1919 courage, perseverance, and grace while creating an active life as
2020 a leader in the community and becoming a prominent figure in
2121 business, philanthropy, and public service; and
2222 WHEREAS, He was a private investor, and he served on the
2323 boards of numerous organizations; he was the first former patient
2424 to serve on the board of Memorial Hermann Hospital and Texas
2525 Institute for Rehabilitation Research, where his insights and
2626 perspective played an important role in enhancing the care that
2727 other patients received; and
2828 WHEREAS, He was appointed to the Texas Alcoholic Beverage
2929 Commission by Governor Bill Clements, and he served as chair of
3030 the commission under Governors George W. Bush and Rick Perry; he
3131 was the founder and chairman of the Seton Fund, and he was
3232 chairman of the Headliners Foundation for many years; he served
3333 on the boards of Saint Edward's University, the University of
3434 Saint Thomas, the Austin Chamber of Commerce, and Texans for
3535 Lawsuit Reform; and
3636 WHEREAS, He married his beloved wife, the late Robin
3737 Ratliff Shivers, in 1978, and they enjoyed 31 years of marriage
3838 together; as a couple, they were a mainstay in the Austin civic
3939 and philanthropic scene, and they were active together in such
4040 organizations as the Seton Healthcare Family; Robin was active
4141 with American YouthWorks and was cofounder of the Health Alliance
4242 for Austin Musicians; and
4343 WHEREAS, Bud Shivers was an exemplary citizen who touched
4444 the lives of countless people through his generosity and
4545 commitment to public service; his courage in the face of
4646 adversity was an inspiration to others, and he leaves behind
4747 memories that will be cherished forever by his family and many
4848 friends; now, therefore, be it
4949 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
5050 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
5151 family of Robert Allan Shivers Jr.; and, be it further
5252 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5353 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
5454 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
5555 memory of Robert Allan Shivers Jr.
