4	4	Robert Allan Shivers
5	5	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
6	6	commemorates the life of Robert Allan "Bud" Shivers Jr., who died
7	7	January 8, 2019, at the age of 72; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Bud Shivers was born on January 21, 1946, in San
9	9	Antonio, to Allan and Marialice Shivers; the son of a powerful
10	10	Texas governor, he grew up in Austin, and he attended Austin
11	11	public schools until 10th grade, when he left to attend the
12	12	Lawrenceville School in New Jersey; and
13	13	WHEREAS, Following his graduation from Lawrenceville in
14	14	1964, he returned to Austin and studied finance at The University
15	15	of Texas; he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 1968,
16	16	and a year later, he was injured in a diving accident that left
17	17	him a quadriplegic for the rest of his life; and
18	18	WHEREAS, Despite his disability, Bud Shivers displayed
19	19	courage, perseverance, and grace while creating an active life as
20	20	a leader in the community and becoming a prominent figure in
21	21	business, philanthropy, and public service; and
22	22	WHEREAS, He was a private investor, and he served on the
23	23	boards of numerous organizations; he was the first former patient
24	24	to serve on the board of Memorial Hermann Hospital and Texas
25	25	Institute for Rehabilitation Research, where his insights and
26	26	perspective played an important role in enhancing the care that
27	27	other patients received; and
28	28	WHEREAS, He was appointed to the Texas Alcoholic Beverage
29	29	Commission by Governor Bill Clements, and he served as chair of
30	30	the commission under Governors George W. Bush and Rick Perry; he
31	31	was the founder and chairman of the Seton Fund, and he was
32	32	chairman of the Headliners Foundation for many years; he served
33	33	on the boards of Saint Edward's University, the University of
34	34	Saint Thomas, the Austin Chamber of Commerce, and Texans for
35	35	Lawsuit Reform; and
36	36	WHEREAS, He married his beloved wife, the late Robin
37	37	Ratliff Shivers, in 1978, and they enjoyed 31 years of marriage
38	38	together; as a couple, they were a mainstay in the Austin civic
39	39	and philanthropic scene, and they were active together in such
40	40	organizations as the Seton Healthcare Family; Robin was active
41	41	with American YouthWorks and was cofounder of the Health Alliance
42	42	for Austin Musicians; and
43	43	WHEREAS, Bud Shivers was an exemplary citizen who touched
44	44	the lives of countless people through his generosity and
45	45	commitment to public service; his courage in the face of
46	46	adversity was an inspiration to others, and he leaves behind
47	47	memories that will be cherished forever by his family and many
48	48	friends; now, therefore, be it
49	49	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
50	50	Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
51	51	family of Robert Allan Shivers Jr.; and, be it further
52	52	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
53	53	his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
54	54	Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
55	55	memory of Robert Allan Shivers Jr.
