| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize Judge Migdalia Lopez, who retired on December 31, 2018, |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | from the 197th District Court after 20 years of distinguished |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | service; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Judge Lopez started her career on the bench in |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | 1995, when she became the first Hispanic woman to preside over |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Cameron County Court-at-Law Number 2; she had previously served |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | for nearly 10 years as a Cameron County assistant district |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | attorney; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, On January 1, 1999, she was sworn in as judge of |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | the 197th District Court, which serves Cameron and Willacy |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Counties; during her tenure, she was noted for her fairness and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | impartiality, her thorough knowledge of the law, and her passion |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | for serving the public good; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Judge Lopez has served on a number of boards and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | commissions, including the Texas Access for Justice Commission |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | and the Texas Juvenile Probation Commission; she has been active |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | in her community and has focused particularly on issues affecting |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | children and education; she formerly served as a member of the |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | board of trustees of the Harlingen Consolidated Independent |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | School District; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Judge Lopez was named the 1996 Hispanic Woman of |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | the Year by the Valley Morning Star and was the recipient of the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Ma'at Justice Award from Women and Law Section of the State Bar of |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Texas; it is truly fitting that she receive special recognition |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | for the positive impact she has had on the justice system in South |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Texas; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Legislature, hereby commend Judge Migdalia Lopez on her |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | exceptional service on the bench of the 197th District Court and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | extend to her best wishes for continued success in all her |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | endeavors; and, be it further |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | her as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. |
