11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 367
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize Sergio Alberto Tinoco for his commitment to public
44 service and his success in the face of great adversity; and
55 WHEREAS, Sergio Tinoco was born in Pharr, Texas, while his
66 mother, a resident of Reynosa, Mexico, was visiting her parents;
77 he spent his early years with his mother in Reynosa, and at
88 the age of six, he moved to his grandparents' home in Weslaco,
99 Texas; and
1010 WHEREAS, Sergio began working as a migrant farmworker at
1111 the young age of seven; by the age of 17, he was balancing his
1212 academics and two jobs during high school, yet he graduated in
1313 the top 10 percent of his class; and
1414 WHEREAS, Determined to break a family cycle of poverty and
1515 migrant work, Sergio joined the United States Army; he served in
1616 Bosnia-Herzegovina in the aftermath of the Bosnian War and earned
1717 numerous commendations, and he retired after 10 years of
1818 distinguished service; he went on to have a successful career as
1919 a United States Border Patrol agent, and during his tenure, he
2020 has carried out his duties in the face of numerous challenging
2121 and dangerous circumstances; and
2222 WHEREAS, Sergio has shared his story of perseverance in his
2323 award-winning book, Proud American: The Migrant, Soldier, and
2424 Agent; the compelling memoir chronicles his journey from a young,
2525 first-generation American struggling to learn English to a proud
2626 patriot who built a life of purpose and who found success in spite
2727 of a difficult background; and
2828 WHEREAS, Sergio Tinoco is a beloved husband and father and
2929 a cherished member of his community; he exemplifies the highest
3030 ideals of public service, and his strength and resilience will
3131 continue to inspire others long into the future; now, therefore,
3232 be it
3333 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
3434 Legislature, hereby commend Sergio Alberto Tinoco on his many
3535 accomplishments and congratulate him on the exceptional success
3636 of his memoir; and, be it further
3737 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3838 him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
