1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 37
2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	join Texans across the state in celebrating February 12, 2019, as
4	4	Baylor Day at the Capitol; and
5	5	WHEREAS, Baylor University was established February 1,
6	6	1845, by an act of the Congress of the Republic of Texas; it is
7	7	the oldest continually operating university in the state; and
8	8	WHEREAS, This private Christian university and nationally
9	9	ranked research institution provides a vibrant campus community
10	10	to some 17,000 students; it offers 128 undergraduate degrees, 77
11	11	graduate degrees, 46 doctoral degrees, and a juris doctor in
12	12	addition to a wide array of preprofessional tracks and
13	13	specialized academic opportunities; and
14	14	WHEREAS, The university's combination of interdisciplinary
15	15	research and a faculty committed to teaching and scholarship has
16	16	served to create an institution with an international reputation
17	17	for educational excellence; and
18	18	WHEREAS, Baylor has launched an ambitious academic
19	19	strategic plan titled "Illuminate" that puts the university on a
20	20	path to become the state's next tier one research institution
21	21	while maintaining its historic Texas Baptist roots and focusing
22	22	on critical areas such as health, materials science, data
23	23	sciences, human flourishing and ethics, and Latin America; and
24	24	WHEREAS, Baylor University is also home to a variety of
25	25	exceptional athletic programs; its football team recently won
26	26	the 2018 Texas Bowl game, and the women's basketball team
27	27	continued its dominance with its eighth consecutive sweep of
28	28	regular season and conference tournament titles while reaching
29	29	the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament; in
30	30	addition, the acrobatics and tumbling team won its fourth
31	31	straight National Collegiate Acrobatics and Tumbling Association
32	32	national title; now, therefore, be it
33	33	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
34	34	Legislature, hereby commend Baylor University on its commitment
35	35	to educating men and women for worldwide leadership and service
36	36	and extend to its students, faculty, and staff best wishes for a
37	37	memorable Baylor Day at the Capitol; and, be it further
38	38	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
39	39	the university as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
