| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|---|
| 3 | 3 | | recognize the City of Weslaco, which is celebrating its |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | centennial throughout the year 2019; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Weslaco was established in 1919 when local |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | leaders Ed C. Couch and R. L. Reeves platted and sold lots on a |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | townsite obtained from the W. E. Stewart Land Company; the town's |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | name resulted from combining letters from the land company's |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | title; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Weslaco is the site of many well-known landmarks, |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | such as its 100-foot water tower, which was constructed by the |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Works Progress Administration and completed in 1941; known as El |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Tinaco, the tower was constructed as a concrete cylinder and has |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | been recognized with an Official Texas Historical Marker; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Today, Weslaco is home to more than 40,000 |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | residents, who enjoy exceptional public safety services, as well |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | as outstanding schools, parks, and commercial enterprises; |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | members of its diverse population are active in a wide range of |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | charitable and civic organizations; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Weslaco is an exemplary place in which to live, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | work, and raise families; its citizens continue to embrace their |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | rich past while looking forward to a more prosperous future, and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | it is truly fitting that the city receive special recognition as |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | it reaches this milestone in its history; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Weslaco on their many |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | contributions to the growth and prosperity of our state and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | extend to them best wishes throughout the yearlong Weslaco |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Centennial Celebration activities; and, be it further |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | honor of the City of Weslaco. |
