5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |

6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of Sudie Todd Blackburn, who died |
---|
7 | 7 | | October 26, 2018, at the age of 97; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Sudie Blackburn was an exemplary citizen who was |
---|
9 | 9 | | widely respected and admired for her outstanding achievements |
---|
10 | 10 | | and her many contributions to the fabric of life in the |
---|
11 | 11 | | Brownsville community; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, She was born on April 21, 1921, in Port Arthur, to |
---|
13 | 13 | | Clifton Marcus Todd and Marie Berenice Rivette Todd; she and her |
---|
14 | 14 | | beloved husband of more than four decades, the late Cyrus E. |
---|
15 | 15 | | Blackburn, married in 1939, and they were blessed with two |
---|
16 | 16 | | children, Bonnie Holland and John Blackburn; her granddaughter, |
---|
17 | 17 | | Amy, and her nieces, nephews, and many cousins were a source of |
---|
18 | 18 | | much pride and joy for her; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Blackburn and her family settled in |
---|
20 | 20 | | Brownsville in 1949 after a decade of traveling the world as part |
---|
21 | 21 | | of Mr. Blackburn's career with Pan American Airways; they |
---|
22 | 22 | | established a successful business, which eventually was known as |
---|
23 | 23 | | Blackburn Home Electronics; after Cyrus died, Sudie continued to |
---|
24 | 24 | | operate the business until her retirement in 1993; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, A respected community leader, Sudie was elected |
---|
26 | 26 | | to the Brownsville Independent School District Board of Trustees |
---|
27 | 27 | | in 1959 and served with distinction until 1971; she played an |
---|
28 | 28 | | important role in the integration of the city's schools and in |
---|
29 | 29 | | ensuring that students of all races and backgrounds were treated |
---|
30 | 30 | | fairly; she chaired the committee that was responsible for the |
---|
31 | 31 | | bond election that led to the creation of Hanna High School; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, She was a charter member of the Zonta Club of |
---|
33 | 33 | | Brownsville and a longtime member of the West Brownsville Garden |
---|
34 | 34 | | Club; she was elected district governor of the Texas Garden Clubs |
---|
35 | 35 | | and was asked to work with Lady Bird Johnson on the campaign to |
---|
36 | 36 | | beautify Texas highways; and |
---|
37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, A woman of courage, strength, and generosity, she |
---|
38 | 38 | | gave unselfishly to others, and her wisdom, her grace, and her |
---|
39 | 39 | | enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest will not be |
---|
40 | 40 | | forgotten; and |
---|
41 | 41 | | WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, |
---|
42 | 42 | | and she leaves behind memories that will be cherished forever by |
---|
43 | 43 | | her family and many friends; now, therefore, be it |
---|
44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
45 | 45 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
46 | 46 | | family of Sudie Todd Blackburn; and, be it further |
---|
47 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
48 | 48 | | her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
49 | 49 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
50 | 50 | | memory of Sudie Blackburn. |
