55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Sudie Todd Blackburn, who died
77 October 26, 2018, at the age of 97; and
88 WHEREAS, Sudie Blackburn was an exemplary citizen who was
99 widely respected and admired for her outstanding achievements
1010 and her many contributions to the fabric of life in the
1111 Brownsville community; and
1212 WHEREAS, She was born on April 21, 1921, in Port Arthur, to
1313 Clifton Marcus Todd and Marie Berenice Rivette Todd; she and her
1414 beloved husband of more than four decades, the late Cyrus E.
1515 Blackburn, married in 1939, and they were blessed with two
1616 children, Bonnie Holland and John Blackburn; her granddaughter,
1717 Amy, and her nieces, nephews, and many cousins were a source of
1818 much pride and joy for her; and
1919 WHEREAS, Mrs. Blackburn and her family settled in
2020 Brownsville in 1949 after a decade of traveling the world as part
2121 of Mr. Blackburn's career with Pan American Airways; they
2222 established a successful business, which eventually was known as
2323 Blackburn Home Electronics; after Cyrus died, Sudie continued to
2424 operate the business until her retirement in 1993; and
2525 WHEREAS, A respected community leader, Sudie was elected
2626 to the Brownsville Independent School District Board of Trustees
2727 in 1959 and served with distinction until 1971; she played an
2828 important role in the integration of the city's schools and in
2929 ensuring that students of all races and backgrounds were treated
3030 fairly; she chaired the committee that was responsible for the
3131 bond election that led to the creation of Hanna High School; and
3232 WHEREAS, She was a charter member of the Zonta Club of
3333 Brownsville and a longtime member of the West Brownsville Garden
3434 Club; she was elected district governor of the Texas Garden Clubs
3535 and was asked to work with Lady Bird Johnson on the campaign to
3636 beautify Texas highways; and
3737 WHEREAS, A woman of courage, strength, and generosity, she
3838 gave unselfishly to others, and her wisdom, her grace, and her
3939 enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest will not be
4040 forgotten; and
4141 WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother,
4242 and she leaves behind memories that will be cherished forever by
4343 her family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
4444 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
4545 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4646 family of Sudie Todd Blackburn; and, be it further
4747 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4848 her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4949 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
5050 memory of Sudie Blackburn.
