55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of D. R. "Tom" Uher, who died March 9, 2019,
77 at the age of 81; and
88 WHEREAS, A native of Bay City, Texas, Tom Uher was born on
99 December 16, 1937, to Alfonso A. Uher and May Bittick Uher; he
1010 graduated from Bay City High School in 1956; and
1111 WHEREAS, Tom earned a bachelor's degree in business
1212 administration from The University of Texas and a doctorate of
1313 jurisprudence from The University of Texas School of Law; he
1414 returned to his beloved hometown after graduation to begin his
1515 law practice, and he continued to practice for 55 years; and
1616 WHEREAS, On his birthday in 1967, Tom was elected to the
1717 Texas House of Representatives, and he was a strong voice for the
1818 citizens of Matagorda, Wharton, and Brazoria Counties for 36
1919 years; and
2020 WHEREAS, He served on numerous committees during his
2121 legislative tenure, and he was most passionate about his work as
2222 vice chair of the Committee on Higher Education and chair of the
2323 Higher Education Subcommittee on Budget and Oversight; he
2424 authored and guided the passing of the MD Anderson Cancer Center
2525 Self Referral Bill, and he served as both speaker pro tempore and
2626 dean of the House; and
2727 WHEREAS, A man of deep spiritual faith, Tom taught Bible
2828 study at the First Presbyterian Church; he was known for his
2929 generous spirit and his outgoing personality, and he enjoyed
3030 coaching Little League and cheering for the Texas Longhorns; and
3131 WHEREAS, Tom Uher was a devoted husband, a tireless public
3232 servant, and a trusted mentor to many; he was a treasured citizen
3333 of the Lone Star State, and he will long be remembered with
3434 respect and admiration by all who were privileged to share in his
3535 life; now, therefore, be it
3636 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
3737 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
3838 family of D. R. "Tom" Uher; and, be it further
3939 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4040 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4141 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4242 memory of Tom Uher.
