5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
---|
6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of D. R. "Tom" Uher, who died March 9, 2019, |
---|
7 | 7 | | at the age of 81; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A native of Bay City, Texas, Tom Uher was born on |
---|
9 | 9 | | December 16, 1937, to Alfonso A. Uher and May Bittick Uher; he |
---|
10 | 10 | | graduated from Bay City High School in 1956; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Tom earned a bachelor's degree in business |
---|
12 | 12 | | administration from The University of Texas and a doctorate of |
---|
13 | 13 | | jurisprudence from The University of Texas School of Law; he |
---|
14 | 14 | | returned to his beloved hometown after graduation to begin his |
---|
15 | 15 | | law practice, and he continued to practice for 55 years; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, On his birthday in 1967, Tom was elected to the |
---|
17 | 17 | | Texas House of Representatives, and he was a strong voice for the |
---|
18 | 18 | | citizens of Matagorda, Wharton, and Brazoria Counties for 36 |
---|
19 | 19 | | years; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, He served on numerous committees during his |
---|
21 | 21 | | legislative tenure, and he was most passionate about his work as |
---|
22 | 22 | | vice chair of the Committee on Higher Education and chair of the |
---|
23 | 23 | | Higher Education Subcommittee on Budget and Oversight; he |
---|
24 | 24 | | authored and guided the passing of the MD Anderson Cancer Center |
---|
25 | 25 | | Self Referral Bill, and he served as both speaker pro tempore and |
---|
26 | 26 | | dean of the House; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, A man of deep spiritual faith, Tom taught Bible |
---|
28 | 28 | | study at the First Presbyterian Church; he was known for his |
---|
29 | 29 | | generous spirit and his outgoing personality, and he enjoyed |
---|
30 | 30 | | coaching Little League and cheering for the Texas Longhorns; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Tom Uher was a devoted husband, a tireless public |
---|
32 | 32 | | servant, and a trusted mentor to many; he was a treasured citizen |
---|
33 | 33 | | of the Lone Star State, and he will long be remembered with |
---|
34 | 34 | | respect and admiration by all who were privileged to share in his |
---|
35 | 35 | | life; now, therefore, be it |
---|
36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |

37 | 37 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
38 | 38 | | family of D. R. "Tom" Uher; and, be it further |

39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
