5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
---|
6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of Shirley Spellerberg, who died March 9, |
---|
7 | 7 | | 2019, at the age of 90; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Shirley Spellerberg was born and raised in Waco; |
---|
9 | 9 | | she married her beloved husband, the late Herman R. Spellerberg, |
---|
10 | 10 | | while he was on leave from Pan American World Airways; when he |
---|
11 | 11 | | returned home after serving a tour of duty in Korea with the |
---|
12 | 12 | | United States Air Force, the couple lived in Pasadena for several |
---|
13 | 13 | | years before moving to Miami; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, While in Miami, Mrs. Spellerberg was active in |
---|
15 | 15 | | Republican Party politics and served as a member of the Florida |
---|
16 | 16 | | State Republican Executive Committee; she also hosted a |
---|
17 | 17 | | conservative talk radio program called Speak Out Miami, and she |
---|
18 | 18 | | served as president of the Florida Federation of Women for |
---|
19 | 19 | | Responsible Legislation; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, In 1979, she and her husband returned to Texas; |
---|
21 | 21 | | she served for many years as mayor of Corinth and was an |
---|
22 | 22 | | influential voice in the economic development of the community; |
---|
23 | 23 | | she was instrumental in the adoption of the city's home rule |
---|
24 | 24 | | charter and in the 2000 opening of a campus of North Central Texas |
---|
25 | 25 | | College in Corinth; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, She continued her political activities and was a |
---|
27 | 27 | | leading member of the Denton County Republican Party and served |
---|
28 | 28 | | three terms as president of the Denton Republican Women's Club; |
---|
29 | 29 | | she served for eight years as a member of the State Republican |
---|
30 | 30 | | Executive Committee and played a vital role in shaping the |
---|
31 | 31 | | platform of the Texas Republican Party; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Shirley was blessed with two sons and a |
---|
33 | 33 | | granddaughter, who were a source of much pride and joy for her; a |
---|
34 | 34 | | woman of courage, strength, and determination, she gave |
---|
35 | 35 | | unselfishly to others, and her commitment to public service was a |
---|
36 | 36 | | source of inspiration to all who were privileged to share in her |
---|
37 | 37 | | life; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, |
---|
39 | 39 | | and she leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by |
---|
40 | 40 | | her family and many friends; now, therefore, be it |
---|
41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
42 | 42 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
43 | 43 | | family of Shirley Spellerberg; and, be it further |
---|
44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
45 | 45 | | her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
46 | 46 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
47 | 47 | | memory of Shirley Spellerberg. |
