44 Shirley Spellerberg
55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Shirley Spellerberg, who died March 9,
77 2019, at the age of 90; and
88 WHEREAS, Shirley Spellerberg was born and raised in Waco;
99 she married her beloved husband, the late Herman R. Spellerberg,
1010 while he was on leave from Pan American World Airways; when he
1111 returned home after serving a tour of duty in Korea with the
1212 United States Air Force, the couple lived in Pasadena for several
1313 years before moving to Miami; and
1414 WHEREAS, While in Miami, Mrs. Spellerberg was active in
1515 Republican Party politics and served as a member of the Florida
1616 State Republican Executive Committee; she also hosted a
1717 conservative talk radio program called Speak Out Miami, and she
1818 served as president of the Florida Federation of Women for
1919 Responsible Legislation; and
2020 WHEREAS, In 1979, she and her husband returned to Texas;
2121 she served for many years as mayor of Corinth and was an
2222 influential voice in the economic development of the community;
2323 she was instrumental in the adoption of the city's home rule
2424 charter and in the 2000 opening of a campus of North Central Texas
2525 College in Corinth; and
2626 WHEREAS, She continued her political activities and was a
2727 leading member of the Denton County Republican Party and served
2828 three terms as president of the Denton Republican Women's Club;
2929 she served for eight years as a member of the State Republican
3030 Executive Committee and played a vital role in shaping the
3131 platform of the Texas Republican Party; and
3232 WHEREAS, Shirley was blessed with two sons and a
3333 granddaughter, who were a source of much pride and joy for her; a
3434 woman of courage, strength, and determination, she gave
3535 unselfishly to others, and her commitment to public service was a
3636 source of inspiration to all who were privileged to share in her
3737 life; and
3838 WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother,
3939 and she leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by
4040 her family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
4141 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
4242 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4343 family of Shirley Spellerberg; and, be it further
4444 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4545 her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4646 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4747 memory of Shirley Spellerberg.
