5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Billie Elizabeth Holcomb Hooper, a respected |
---|
6 | 6 | | educator and friend to many, passed away on February 25, 2019, at |

7 | 7 | | the age of 95; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The daughter of Wiley and Jewel Holcomb, the |
---|
9 | 9 | | former Billie Holcomb was born on October 6, 1923, in |
---|
10 | 10 | | Jacksonville and grew up with a brother, Ed; she graduated from |
---|
11 | 11 | | Jacksonville High School and went on to earn a bachelor's degree |
---|
12 | 12 | | from Texas Woman's University and a master's degree from Stephen |
---|
13 | 13 | | F. Austin State University; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan began her career at the age of |
---|
15 | 15 | | 20 when she accepted a teaching position in Lufkin; she later |
---|
16 | 16 | | taught speech and English in the Henderson Independent School |
---|
17 | 17 | | District, and she became the head of the English department at |
---|
18 | 18 | | Henderson High School before retiring in 1989; over the years, |
---|
19 | 19 | | she inspired countless students with her passion for education |
---|
20 | 20 | | and firm but fair teaching style; she was also a valued member of |
---|
21 | 21 | | First United Methodist Church, where she took an active role in |
---|
22 | 22 | | the PALS Sunday school class; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Hooper was married to Gene M. Hooper, who |
---|
24 | 24 | | preceded her in death in 1958; she took great pride in their |
---|
25 | 25 | | children, Paula, Beth, Chrisan, and Mart, and with the passing |
---|
26 | 26 | | years, she had the pleasure of welcoming into her family eight |
---|
27 | 27 | | grandchildren, John, Meredith, Jeffrey, Martin, Lily, Steven, |
---|
28 | 28 | | Shawn, and Jennifer, and four great-grandchildren, Mallory, |
---|
29 | 29 | | John, Caden, and Reese; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Deeply devoted to her family and her profession, |
---|
31 | 31 | | Billie Hooper made a meaningful difference in the lives of her |
---|
32 | 32 | | loved ones and students alike, and she will be remembered and |
---|
33 | 33 | | admired for years to come; now, therefore, be it |
---|
34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
35 | 35 | | Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Billie Elizabeth |
---|
36 | 36 | | Holcomb Hooper and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn |
---|
37 | 37 | | her passing; and, be it further |

38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
