2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Texas State Rifle Association is celebrating |

3 | 3 | | its 100th anniversary in 2019; and |
---|
4 | 4 | | WHEREAS, Established in 1919, the Texas State Rifle |
---|
5 | 5 | | Association is an independent organization affiliated with, and |
---|
6 | 6 | | recognized by, the National Rifle Association; its primary goal |
---|
7 | 7 | | was to promote and encourage rifle shooting through training and |
---|
8 | 8 | | competitions in the state and by competition with other such |
---|
9 | 9 | | groups across the nation; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, With the growth of association membership over |
---|
11 | 11 | | the years, youth shooting and safety programs have developed in |
---|
12 | 12 | | such organizations as 4-H, the Boy Scouts of America, the |
---|
13 | 13 | | American Legion, the National High School Rodeo Association, and |
---|
14 | 14 | | ROTC; in cooperation with the National Rifle Association, the |
---|
15 | 15 | | Texas State Rifle Association sanctions state matches each year |
---|
16 | 16 | | in more than 20 different shooting disciplines, and the state |
---|
17 | 17 | | winners are eligible to advance to national competitions; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, For many years, the association has carefully |
---|
19 | 19 | | monitored other state legislatures and the United States |
---|
20 | 20 | | Congress in its role as a strong supporter of the rights of |
---|
21 | 21 | | law-abiding citizens to own firearms; the association had no |
---|
22 | 22 | | active presence at the Texas State Capitol until 1985, when Doc |
---|
23 | 23 | | Brown advocated on behalf of the association for the passage of a |
---|
24 | 24 | | firearms preemption bill and a bill to stop hunter harassment, |
---|
25 | 25 | | both of which were signed into law by Governor Mark White; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Today, the 35,000 members of the Texas State Rifle |
---|
27 | 27 | | Association proudly maintain the association's original |
---|
28 | 28 | | commitment to firearm skill development, youth participation, |
---|
29 | 29 | | and safety training, as well as its support for traditional |
---|
30 | 30 | | hunting and its ongoing dedication to firearm ownership and |
---|
31 | 31 | | Second Amendment rights; now, therefore, be it |
---|
32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
33 | 33 | | Legislature, hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the |
---|
34 | 34 | | Texas State Rifle Association and commend its directors, |
---|
35 | 35 | | officers, and members for their contributions to the legislative |
---|
36 | 36 | | process; and, be it further |
---|
37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
---|
38 | 38 | | prepared for the Texas State Rifle Association as an expression |
---|
39 | 39 | | of high regard by the Texas Senate. |
