2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | recognize the citizens of Waco who have come to Austin to |
---|
4 | 4 | | celebrate Waco Day at the State Capitol on April 10, 2019; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Waco was founded in 1849 and played a central role |
---|
6 | 6 | | in the development of the Lone Star State in the 1800s; it served |
---|
7 | 7 | | as a center for cotton farming, as a stopping point for the |
---|
8 | 8 | | cowboys on the Chisholm Trail, and as a thriving transportation |
---|
9 | 9 | | and marketing hub; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, By the mid-1900s, Waco had grown into an important |
---|
11 | 11 | | manufacturing center, and in recent decades, other sectors such |
---|
12 | 12 | | as health care and aerospace have made significant contributions |
---|
13 | 13 | | to the local economy; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Tourism is also a factor in the region's |
---|
15 | 15 | | prosperity, and Waco had the highest hotel occupancy rate in the |
---|
16 | 16 | | state in 2018; residents and visitors alike are drawn to such |
---|
17 | 17 | | attractions as the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and the Texas |
---|
18 | 18 | | Rangers Hall of Fame and Museum, as well as the scenic |
---|
19 | 19 | | surroundings of Lake Waco and Cameron Park on the banks of the |
---|
20 | 20 | | Brazos River; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Institutions of higher education have been a key |
---|
22 | 22 | | element in Waco's success throughout its history; Baylor |
---|
23 | 23 | | University has been a part of the city since 1887, and Texas State |
---|
24 | 24 | | Technical College and McLennan Community College have further |
---|
25 | 25 | | enhanced the town's reputation as a place of learning and |
---|
26 | 26 | | innovation; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, During the United States presidency of George |
---|
28 | 28 | | W. Bush, Waco was home to the White House Press Center, which |
---|
29 | 29 | | provided briefing and office facilities for the press corps when |
---|
30 | 30 | | President Bush was at the "Western White House," his ranch in |
---|
31 | 31 | | Crawford, 20 miles west of Waco; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, A fitting symbol of the City of Waco's |
---|
33 | 33 | | forward-thinking attitude is the home of the Greater Waco Chamber |
---|
34 | 34 | | of Commerce, which opened in June of 2008 and was specifically |
---|
35 | 35 | | designed to qualify for gold-level certification from the United |
---|
36 | 36 | | States Green Building Council; the building incorporates a range |
---|
37 | 37 | | of innovative features to create an environmentally sensitive |
---|
38 | 38 | | landmark that serves as a model for additional sustainable |
---|
39 | 39 | | construction projects; and |
---|
40 | 40 | | WHEREAS, Area residents take great pleasure in the city's |
---|
41 | 41 | | high quality of life, and they continue to make vital |
---|
42 | 42 | | contributions to the Lone Star State as they look forward to a |
---|
43 | 43 | | promising future; now, therefore, be it |
---|
44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
45 | 45 | | Legislature, hereby recognize April 10, 2019, as Waco Day at the |
---|
46 | 46 | | State Capitol and extend to those who have come to celebrate this |
---|
47 | 47 | | day a warm welcome and best wishes for a productive and enjoyable |
---|
48 | 48 | | visit to Austin; and, be it further |
---|
49 | 49 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as a |
---|
50 | 50 | | memento of this special day. |
