11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 413
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize the citizens of Waco who have come to Austin to
44 celebrate Waco Day at the State Capitol on April 10, 2019; and
55 WHEREAS, Waco was founded in 1849 and played a central role
66 in the development of the Lone Star State in the 1800s; it served
77 as a center for cotton farming, as a stopping point for the
88 cowboys on the Chisholm Trail, and as a thriving transportation
99 and marketing hub; and
1010 WHEREAS, By the mid-1900s, Waco had grown into an important
1111 manufacturing center, and in recent decades, other sectors such
1212 as health care and aerospace have made significant contributions
1313 to the local economy; and
1414 WHEREAS, Tourism is also a factor in the region's
1515 prosperity, and Waco had the highest hotel occupancy rate in the
1616 state in 2018; residents and visitors alike are drawn to such
1717 attractions as the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and the Texas
1818 Rangers Hall of Fame and Museum, as well as the scenic
1919 surroundings of Lake Waco and Cameron Park on the banks of the
2020 Brazos River; and
2121 WHEREAS, Institutions of higher education have been a key
2222 element in Waco's success throughout its history; Baylor
2323 University has been a part of the city since 1887, and Texas State
2424 Technical College and McLennan Community College have further
2525 enhanced the town's reputation as a place of learning and
2626 innovation; and
2727 WHEREAS, During the United States presidency of George
2828 W. Bush, Waco was home to the White House Press Center, which
2929 provided briefing and office facilities for the press corps when
3030 President Bush was at the "Western White House," his ranch in
3131 Crawford, 20 miles west of Waco; and
3232 WHEREAS, A fitting symbol of the City of Waco's
3333 forward-thinking attitude is the home of the Greater Waco Chamber
3434 of Commerce, which opened in June of 2008 and was specifically
3535 designed to qualify for gold-level certification from the United
3636 States Green Building Council; the building incorporates a range
3737 of innovative features to create an environmentally sensitive
3838 landmark that serves as a model for additional sustainable
3939 construction projects; and
4040 WHEREAS, Area residents take great pleasure in the city's
4141 high quality of life, and they continue to make vital
4242 contributions to the Lone Star State as they look forward to a
4343 promising future; now, therefore, be it
4444 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
4545 Legislature, hereby recognize April 10, 2019, as Waco Day at the
4646 State Capitol and extend to those who have come to celebrate this
4747 day a warm welcome and best wishes for a productive and enjoyable
4848 visit to Austin; and, be it further
4949 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as a
5050 memento of this special day.
