11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 429
22 WHEREAS, Proud residents of Port Aransas are gathering in
33 Austin to celebrate Port Aransas Day at the State Capitol on
44 March 19, 2019; and
55 WHEREAS, The site of the town on Mustang Island was first
66 inhabited by the Karankawa, and in the early 1800s, it was
77 frequented by the famed buccaneer Jean Lafitte; the natural
88 passage between the island and Saint Joseph Island was originally
99 named Aranzazu, and it became known as Aransas Pass; and
1010 WHEREAS, In 1855, an English sheep and cattle rancher named
1111 Robert A. Mercer built a cabin on Mustang Island at the site that
1212 later became the town; Elihu Harrison Ropes started a project to
1313 dig a channel across the island in 1890, and the community that
1414 grew around the new post office was called Ropesville; in 1896,
1515 it was renamed Tarpon to highlight the island's fine fishing, and
1616 in 1911, the town was officially designated as Port Aransas; and
1717 WHEREAS, Since World War II, the city has become one of the
1818 most popular resort destinations on the Texas Gulf Coast; the
1919 superb beaches draw campers, swimmers, and surfers from across the
2020 Lone Star State, and the town's launching ramps, lighted piers, and
2121 jetties enable anglers to catch a wide diversity of fish, including
2222 red snapper, shark, sand trout, tuna, and bonito; and
2323 WHEREAS, Port Aransas is also one of the top bird-watching
2424 destinations in the nation, and many preserved venues afford fine
2525 opportunities to view such local species as herons and roseate
2626 spoonbills and to observe the annual migrations of hummingbirds,
2727 flycatchers, and orioles; and
2828 WHEREAS, The rich variety of sea life found along the Gulf
2929 Coast can be appreciated at The University of Texas Marine Science
3030 Institute; visitors also delight in the town's many fine art
3131 galleries, shops, seafood restaurants, and lodging accommodations,
3232 including the historic Tarpon Inn, which displays tarpon scales
3333 signed by such famous visitors as President Franklin Delano
3434 Roosevelt and movie star Hedy Lamarr; and
3535 WHEREAS, Port Aransas was faced with numerous challenges
3636 after Hurricane Harvey made landfall in August of 2017 and caused
3737 widespread and massive damage to homes, businesses, and city
3838 infrastructure; residents have demonstrated admirable resiliency
3939 and perseverance as they have worked steadfastly to rebuild, and
4040 throughout their recovery efforts, they have continued to welcome
4141 visitors and vacationers from across the state to their beloved
4242 hometown; and
4343 WHEREAS, Blessed with natural beauty and a colorful
4444 history, Port Aransas is one of the jewels of the Lone Star State,
4545 and its citizens may indeed take great pride in their heritage
4646 and ongoing achievements; now, therefore, be it
4747 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
4848 Legislature, hereby recognize March 19, 2019, as Port Aransas Day
4949 at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation
5050 sincere best wishes for an enjoyable and informative visit to
5151 Austin.
