| 3 | 3 | | Austin for Medina County Day at the State Capitol on March 25, |

| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Situated along the divide between the scenic Hill |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Country and the rolling Rio Grande Plains, the area named for the |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Medina River was inhabited by the ancestors of Native Americans |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | for thousands of years before the first Europeans arrived in the |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | late 1600s; during the 1700s, the region was frequented by Apache |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | and Comanche raiding parties, and during the 1840s, it was |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | settled by German-speaking and French-speaking farmers from the |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Alsace region of France, led by Henri Castro; Medina County was |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | established in 1848, with Castroville as the county seat; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, By the 1880s, ranching predominated throughout |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Medina County, and the county's human population was vastly |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | outnumbered by cattle and sheep; new communities sprang up |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | alongside the railroad, and Hondo was made the county seat in |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | 1892; during World War II, Hondo became the home of the Army |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Aviation Navigation School, the largest such facility in the |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | world at the time; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Today, Medina County is home to more than 50,000 |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | people; many residents commute to nearby San Antonio, while |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | ranching and farming, which began to thrive after the completion |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | of the Medina Dam in 1913, support the local economy; visitors |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | and residents alike delight in the county's ample opportunities |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | for hunting, camping, and fishing; Hondo is home to the Hunt |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Hondo event, a celebration of hunting, while Castroville |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | celebrates St. Louis Day every August in recognition of its |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Alsatian heritage; and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich heritage as they work to |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | build a bright future, the people of Medina County may take |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | justifiable pride in the important role they play in the story of |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 25, 2019, as Medina County Day |
