11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 435
22 WHEREAS, Residents from Atascosa County are gathering in
33 Austin on April 2, 2019, to celebrate Atascosa County Day at the
44 State Capitol; and
55 WHEREAS, During the first part of the 19th century, the
66 grassy prairie region of South Texas that would become Atascosa
77 County attracted Spanish, Mexican, and Anglo-American settlers,
88 and by 1856, the region was sufficiently populated to be
99 sectioned off from Bexar County; the county seat, originally at
1010 Navatasco, was later moved to Pleasanton, and then in 1910,
1111 voters supported moving it again, this time to the more centrally
1212 located town of Jourdanton; and
1313 WHEREAS, Atascosa County is home to a number of historical
1414 markers that highlight the area's unique history; notably, the
1515 Battle of Medina, which took place in 1813 and influenced the
1616 fates of Spain, Mexico, the United States, England, and France,
1717 is commemorated with a marker in the northeastern part of the
1818 county, and the site of the church and school community of San
1919 Augustine, founded by heirs of Alamo defender Gregorio Esparza,
2020 is marked near Pleasanton; and
2121 WHEREAS, Situated near the famous Camino Real, Atascosa
2222 County has long benefited from its proximity to major
2323 transportation arteries linking it with the Gulf Coast, the Rio
2424 Grande Valley, and Mexico, as well as other major population
2525 centers; the county enjoys the economic benefits reaped by an
2626 abundance of natural resources and, blessed with productive
2727 rangeandirrigatedfarmland,theareaisknownforitsranching
2828 and agriculture; additionally, the oil and gas industry also
2929 plays a significant role in the economy; and
3030 WHEREAS, Pleasanton, the county's trading center, bills
3131 itself as the birthplace of the cowboy, a designation symbolized
3232 by a large bronze statue in front of city hall; in nearby Poteet,
3333 known to many as the Strawberry Capital, a Strawberry Festival
3434 takes place in April, and a seven-foot, 1,600-pound monument to
3535 the berry graces the front lawn of the fire department; and
3636 WHEREAS, The residents of Atascosa County have made many
3737 notable contributions to the economy and culture of Texas, and
3838 they may take justifiable pride in the place that they call home;
3939 now, therefore, be it
4040 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
4141 Legislature, hereby recognize April 2, 2019, as Atascosa
4242 County Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting
4343 delegation sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable
4444 stay in Austin.
