2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Residents from Atascosa County are gathering in |

3 | 3 | | Austin on April 2, 2019, to celebrate Atascosa County Day at the |
---|
4 | 4 | | State Capitol; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, During the first part of the 19th century, the |
---|
6 | 6 | | grassy prairie region of South Texas that would become Atascosa |
---|
7 | 7 | | County attracted Spanish, Mexican, and Anglo-American settlers, |
---|
8 | 8 | | and by 1856, the region was sufficiently populated to be |
---|
9 | 9 | | sectioned off from Bexar County; the county seat, originally at |
---|
10 | 10 | | Navatasco, was later moved to Pleasanton, and then in 1910, |
---|
11 | 11 | | voters supported moving it again, this time to the more centrally |
---|
12 | 12 | | located town of Jourdanton; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Atascosa County is home to a number of historical |
---|
14 | 14 | | markers that highlight the area's unique history; notably, the |
---|
15 | 15 | | Battle of Medina, which took place in 1813 and influenced the |
---|
16 | 16 | | fates of Spain, Mexico, the United States, England, and France, |
---|
17 | 17 | | is commemorated with a marker in the northeastern part of the |
---|
18 | 18 | | county, and the site of the church and school community of San |
---|
19 | 19 | | Augustine, founded by heirs of Alamo defender Gregorio Esparza, |
---|
20 | 20 | | is marked near Pleasanton; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Situated near the famous Camino Real, Atascosa |
---|
22 | 22 | | County has long benefited from its proximity to major |
---|
23 | 23 | | transportation arteries linking it with the Gulf Coast, the Rio |
---|
24 | 24 | | Grande Valley, and Mexico, as well as other major population |
---|
25 | 25 | | centers; the county enjoys the economic benefits reaped by an |
---|
26 | 26 | | abundance of natural resources and, blessed with productive |
---|
27 | 27 | | rangeandirrigatedfarmland,theareaisknownforitsranching |
---|
28 | 28 | | and agriculture; additionally, the oil and gas industry also |
---|
29 | 29 | | plays a significant role in the economy; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Pleasanton, the county's trading center, bills |
---|
31 | 31 | | itself as the birthplace of the cowboy, a designation symbolized |
---|
32 | 32 | | by a large bronze statue in front of city hall; in nearby Poteet, |
---|
33 | 33 | | known to many as the Strawberry Capital, a Strawberry Festival |
---|
34 | 34 | | takes place in April, and a seven-foot, 1,600-pound monument to |
---|
35 | 35 | | the berry graces the front lawn of the fire department; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, The residents of Atascosa County have made many |
---|
37 | 37 | | notable contributions to the economy and culture of Texas, and |
---|
38 | 38 | | they may take justifiable pride in the place that they call home; |
---|
39 | 39 | | now, therefore, be it |
---|
40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
41 | 41 | | Legislature, hereby recognize April 2, 2019, as Atascosa |
---|
42 | 42 | | County Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting |
---|
43 | 43 | | delegation sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable |
---|
44 | 44 | | stay in Austin. |
