SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 436 WHEREAS, Residents of Real County are gathering in Austin to celebrate Real County Day at the State Capitol on March 27, 2019; and WHEREAS, Situated along the Balcones Escarpment, this rugged region of spring-fed streams and scenic canyons was first inhabited by prehistoric peoples thousands of years ago; in the early 1700s, it was traversed by the nomadic Lipan Apaches and other Native Americans, who left striking examples of rock art along the headwaters of the Nueces and Frio Rivers; a Franciscan mission was established along the Nueces River, and it operated from 1762 to 1771; and WHEREAS, Anglo-American settlers began to arrive in the 1850s, and in 1857, the United States Army set up Camp Wood near the site of the old mission; after the Civil War, the camp was used by the army and the Texas Rangers during the years of the last Indian raids; much of the region became part of Edwards County in 1883, and in 1913, the legislature established Real County from parts of Edwards, Bandera, and Kerr Counties, with Leakey as the county seat; and WHEREAS, Today, Real County's economy is based on goat, sheep, and cattle ranching as well as cedar products; the county also draws visitors from around the state with its scenic drives and ample opportunities for hunting, camping, fishing, and birding; each year, Camp Wood hosts its Old Settlers Reunion in Lindbergh Park, while Leakey is home to the annual July Jubilee; and WHEREAS, Blessed with abundant natural beauty and a rich history, the residents of Real County may indeed take great pride in the unique part their home has played in the story of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th Legislature, hereby recognize March 27, 2019, as Real County Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable visit to Austin.
