2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Real County are gathering in Austin |
---|
3 | 3 | | to celebrate Real County Day at the State Capitol on |
---|
4 | 4 | | March 27, 2019; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Situated along the Balcones Escarpment, this |
---|
6 | 6 | | rugged region of spring-fed streams and scenic canyons was first |
---|
7 | 7 | | inhabited by prehistoric peoples thousands of years ago; in the |
---|
8 | 8 | | early 1700s, it was traversed by the nomadic Lipan Apaches and |
---|
9 | 9 | | other Native Americans, who left striking examples of rock art |
---|
10 | 10 | | along the headwaters of the Nueces and Frio Rivers; a Franciscan |
---|
11 | 11 | | mission was established along the Nueces River, and it operated |
---|
12 | 12 | | from 1762 to 1771; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Anglo-American settlers began to arrive in the |
---|
14 | 14 | | 1850s, and in 1857, the United States Army set up Camp Wood near |
---|
15 | 15 | | the site of the old mission; after the Civil War, the camp was |
---|
16 | 16 | | used by the army and the Texas Rangers during the years of the |
---|
17 | 17 | | last Indian raids; much of the region became part of Edwards |
---|
18 | 18 | | County in 1883, and in 1913, the legislature established Real |
---|
19 | 19 | | County from parts of Edwards, Bandera, and Kerr Counties, with |
---|
20 | 20 | | Leakey as the county seat; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Today, Real County's economy is based on goat, |
---|
22 | 22 | | sheep, and cattle ranching as well as cedar products; the county |
---|
23 | 23 | | also draws visitors from around the state with its scenic drives and |
---|
24 | 24 | | ample opportunities for hunting, camping, fishing, and birding; |
---|
25 | 25 | | each year, Camp Wood hosts its Old Settlers Reunion in Lindbergh |
---|
26 | 26 | | Park, while Leakey is home to the annual July Jubilee; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Blessed with abundant natural beauty and a rich |
---|
28 | 28 | | history, the residents of Real County may indeed take great pride |
---|
29 | 29 | | in the unique part their home has played in the story of the Lone |
---|
30 | 30 | | Star State; now, therefore, be it |
---|
31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
32 | 32 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 27, 2019, as Real County Day at |
---|
33 | 33 | | the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere |
---|
34 | 34 | | best wishes for a meaningful and memorable visit to Austin. |
