5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
---|
6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of Norman Leon Moorehead, who died March |
---|
7 | 7 | | 10, 2019, at the age of 89; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Norman Moorehead was born on May 28, 1929, in Wills |
---|
9 | 9 | | Point, to Mary T. Wright Moorehead and Lucius G. Moorehead; he was |
---|
10 | 10 | | a graduate of Cartwright High School, and he went on to earn a |
---|
11 | 11 | | degree at Butler College; he served the nation with distinction as |
---|
12 | 12 | | a military policeman with the United States Army; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, After his military service, he earned |
---|
14 | 14 | | postgraduate degrees at Texas Southern University, North Texas |
---|
15 | 15 | | State University, and The University of Texas; he began a long |
---|
16 | 16 | | and distinguished career in public service as an educator in |
---|
17 | 17 | | Wills Point; he went on to work at the Texas State Health |
---|
18 | 18 | | Department, where he established a coordinated network of health |
---|
19 | 19 | | service across 36 counties, and he became the first director of |
---|
20 | 20 | | the Dallas Area Agency on Aging in 1973; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of his tenure with the agency, he |
---|
22 | 22 | | prioritized the development of a seamless system of services for |
---|
23 | 23 | | older adults and played a vital role in the implementation of |
---|
24 | 24 | | such initiatives as the bilingual and bicultural La Voz del |
---|
25 | 25 | | Anciano, the intergenerational Off Our Rockers volunteer |
---|
26 | 26 | | program, and the Access Center for the Elderly, which brought |
---|
27 | 27 | | together over 30 social service agencies in the community; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, He also served on the Governor's Committee on |
---|
29 | 29 | | Aging and the Texas House of Representatives Senior Citizenship |
---|
30 | 30 | | Committee, and he was honored with numerous awards through the |
---|
31 | 31 | | years for his outstanding work; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, He married Nita Faye Brown in 1958, and the couple |
---|
33 | 33 | | enjoyed 61 years of marriage together; his children, his |
---|
34 | 34 | | grandchildren, and his great-granddaughter were a source of much |
---|
35 | 35 | | pride and joy for him; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and generosity, he |
---|
37 | 37 | | gave unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued |
---|
38 | 38 | | counsel will not be forgotten; and |
---|
39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and |
---|
40 | 40 | | grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured |
---|
41 | 41 | | forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
43 | 43 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
44 | 44 | | family of Norman Leon Moorehead; and, be it further |
---|
45 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
46 | 46 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
47 | 47 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
48 | 48 | | memory of Norman Leon Moorehead. |
