55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of Brownsville in mourning the loss of Dr. Francisco
77 Daniel Yturria, who died November 26, 2018, at the age of 95; and
88 WHEREAS, Frank Yturria was born in Austin in 1923; he grew
99 up in a bilingual ranching family in Brownsville, and he excelled
1010 as a varsity football player at Brownsville High School; and
1111 WHEREAS, Frank found great success as a banker, public
1212 servant, rancher conservationist, and philanthropist, yet he
1313 considered himself foremost a South Texas cowboy; as a young man,
1414 he performed with the likes of Gene Autry and Roy Rogers in
1515 Colonel Jim Eskew's Wild West Show, and he went on to earn a
1616 degree in veterinary medicine from Texas A&M University; and
1717 WHEREAS, Frank shared 71 years of devotion with his
1818 cherished wife, Mary Altman Yturria; they were blessed with two
1919 daughters, and his three grandchildren and four
2020 great-grandchildren were a source of great pride and joy; and
2121 WHEREAS, Frank and Mary built a rewarding life of service
2222 to their community; their many civic contributions include
2323 establishing the first Republican Party organization in Cameron
2424 County, and they were instrumental in establishing the historic
2525 Brownsville Museum and the local Boys and Girls Club; the
2626 Brownsville Independent School District honored them for their
2727 service in 1992 by establishing the Frank and Mary Yturria
2828 Elementary School; and
2929 WHEREAS, Frank was appointed a collector of customs by
3030 President Dwight Eisenhower, and he was appointed chairman of the
3131 Inter-American Foundation by Presidents George H. W. Bush and
3232 Bill Clinton; he was also the founder of Brownsville's National
3333 Bank of Commerce and the Texas Bank and Trust, and he earned
3434 national recognition as a conservationist for turning his ranch
3535 into a wildlife refuge and for helping to restore dwindling
3636 populations of several South Texas species; and
3737 WHEREAS, A revered and beloved citizen, Frank Yturria was
3838 known by his many friends and loved ones as an avid horseman, an
3939 enthusiastic world traveler, and above all, a devoted family man;
4040 he was an inspiration to all who knew him, and he leaves behind a
4141 legacy of public service and philanthropy that will continue to
4242 have a positive impact for years to come; now, therefore, be it
4343 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
4444 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4545 family of Dr. Francisco Daniel Yturria; and, be it further
4646 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4747 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4848 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4949 memory of Frank Yturria.
