11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 444
22 WHEREAS, The observance of Red Cross Day at the State
33 Capitol on March 20, 2019, presents an ideal opportunity to honor
44 this venerable organization; and
55 WHEREAS, Nearly 140 years ago, the American Red Cross was
66 established to help anyone in need; today, it is one of the
77 world's largest humanitarian organizations dedicated to
88 alleviating human suffering in the face of emergencies, and 90
99 percent of its work is carried out by volunteers; and
1010 WHEREAS, In Texas, the Red Cross has 17 chapters across
1111 four regions, and in 2018 alone, more than 7,000 volunteers
1212 contributed nearly 600,000 hours to the organization's efforts;
1313 in the wake of the mass shooting at Santa Fe High School, the Red
1414 Cross established a canteen for first responders, as well as a
1515 family reunification center and family assistance centers
1616 offering mental health services and spiritual care; the
1717 organization also supported law enforcement and emergency
1818 personnel dealing with the package bombings in Austin; and
1919 WHEREAS, The Red Cross benefited Texans in many ways during
2020 and after Hurricane Harvey; it opened mega-shelters across the
2121 state and looked after evacuees until they were able to return
2222 home; in addition, volunteers offered long-term assistance for
2323 hundreds of thousands of families affected by the devastation; and
2424 WHEREAS, Each year, the Red Cross trains a host of
2525 volunteers in first aid and such lifesaving techniques as CPR; it
2626 also delivers blood to hospitals, installs free smoke alarms in
2727 at-risk neighborhoods, and provides special services to
2828 veterans, members of the military, and their families; and
2929 WHEREAS, Countless people have looked to the Red Cross for
3030 comfort, assistance, and guidance in their darkest hour, and the
3131 members of the organization may take justifiable pride in their
3232 contributions; now, therefore, be it
3333 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
3434 Legislature, hereby recognize March 20, 2019, as Red Cross Day at
3535 the State Capitol and honor the members of the organization for
3636 their outstanding record of service; and, be it further
3737 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
3838 prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard by
3939 the Texas Senate.
