2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The observance of Red Cross Day at the State |

3 | 3 | | Capitol on March 20, 2019, presents an ideal opportunity to honor |
---|
4 | 4 | | this venerable organization; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Nearly 140 years ago, the American Red Cross was |
---|
6 | 6 | | established to help anyone in need; today, it is one of the |
---|
7 | 7 | | world's largest humanitarian organizations dedicated to |
---|
8 | 8 | | alleviating human suffering in the face of emergencies, and 90 |
---|
9 | 9 | | percent of its work is carried out by volunteers; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, In Texas, the Red Cross has 17 chapters across |
---|
11 | 11 | | four regions, and in 2018 alone, more than 7,000 volunteers |
---|
12 | 12 | | contributed nearly 600,000 hours to the organization's efforts; |
---|
13 | 13 | | in the wake of the mass shooting at Santa Fe High School, the Red |
---|
14 | 14 | | Cross established a canteen for first responders, as well as a |
---|
15 | 15 | | family reunification center and family assistance centers |
---|
16 | 16 | | offering mental health services and spiritual care; the |
---|
17 | 17 | | organization also supported law enforcement and emergency |
---|
18 | 18 | | personnel dealing with the package bombings in Austin; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, The Red Cross benefited Texans in many ways during |
---|
20 | 20 | | and after Hurricane Harvey; it opened mega-shelters across the |
---|
21 | 21 | | state and looked after evacuees until they were able to return |
---|
22 | 22 | | home; in addition, volunteers offered long-term assistance for |
---|
23 | 23 | | hundreds of thousands of families affected by the devastation; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Each year, the Red Cross trains a host of |
---|
25 | 25 | | volunteers in first aid and such lifesaving techniques as CPR; it |
---|
26 | 26 | | also delivers blood to hospitals, installs free smoke alarms in |
---|
27 | 27 | | at-risk neighborhoods, and provides special services to |
---|
28 | 28 | | veterans, members of the military, and their families; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Countless people have looked to the Red Cross for |
---|
30 | 30 | | comfort, assistance, and guidance in their darkest hour, and the |
---|
31 | 31 | | members of the organization may take justifiable pride in their |
---|
32 | 32 | | contributions; now, therefore, be it |
---|
33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
---|
34 | 34 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 20, 2019, as Red Cross Day at |
---|
35 | 35 | | the State Capitol and honor the members of the organization for |
---|
36 | 36 | | their outstanding record of service; and, be it further |
---|
37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
---|
38 | 38 | | prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard by |
---|
39 | 39 | | the Texas Senate. |
