| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize Mazie Warren of Huntsville for his exceptional service |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | during World War II as a member of the Tuskegee Airmen; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | American combat pilots in the United States armed forces; |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | established at a time when the nation and the military were still |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | highly segregated, the unit earned a reputation for its |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | exceptional ability to contribute to the war effort; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Known as the Red Tail Squadron for the distinctive |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | red color of the tail sections of the unit's aircraft, the |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Tuskegee Airmen were skillful pilots and were extraordinarily |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | successful in escorting bombers safely to their targets; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Mazie Warren served the Tuskegee Airmen with |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | distinction as a quartermaster at the squadron's training |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | facility in Tuskegee, Alabama; he was later deployed to Italy, |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | where he faced 14 months of combat action and earned the respect |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | of all those with whom he served; he left military service with |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | the rank of private first class; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Mazie Warren and the Tuskegee Airmen played an |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | important role in helping change American attitudes about the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | role of African Americans in the military; it is truly fitting |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | that he receive special recognition for his achievements with |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | this historic squadron; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Legislature, hereby commend Mazie Warren on his exceptional |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | service to the nation as a member of the Tuskegee Airmen and extend |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | to him best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | him as an expression of highest regard from the Texas Senate. |
