11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 453
22 WHEREAS, Prostate cancer is the second most common type of
33 cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death among
44 American men; and
55 WHEREAS, One in every nine men is diagnosed with prostate
66 cancer over the course of his lifetime, and in 2019, experts
77 estimate that there will be nearly 175,000 new cases and more
88 than 31,500 deaths from prostate cancer; this year,
99 approximately 10,660 Texas men are expected to be diagnosed and
1010 another 1,900 Texans will die from the disease; and
1111 WHEREAS, Although prostate cancer affects men of all races
1212 and socioeconomic levels, African Americans are at an increased
1313 risk; overall, African American men are 1.7 times more likely to
1414 be diagnosed with and 2.3 times more likely to die from prostate
1515 cancer than white men; African American men are also slightly
1616 more likely than white men to be diagnosed with advanced stages
1717 of the disease, which coincide with a far less optimistic
1818 prognosis; and
1919 WHEREAS, Early detection and treatment offer prostate
2020 cancer patients the best hope for a full recovery, and improving
2121 patient outcomes depends a great deal on increasing public
2222 awareness of prostate cancer and its risk factors; men are
2323 advised to consult with their physicians to assess their
2424 individual risk of developing prostate cancer and to determine
2525 whether screenings and other tests are appropriate; and
2626 WHEREAS, Additional focus is needed on the personal and
2727 social burdens of prostate cancer in order to provide patients,
2828 their families, and their caregivers the support they require;
2929 individuals diagnosed with prostate cancer can benefit from
3030 learning about the disease from health care providers, as well as
3131 from taking advantage of support groups and other resources to help
3232 them better cope with their illness and treatment process; and
3333 WHEREAS, There are more scientific studies to be done to
3434 keep the medical community on the leading edge of prostate cancer
3535 treatments, and the observance of Prostate Cancer Awareness
3636 Month in September is an opportunity for the State of Texas to
3737 affirm its commitment to prostate cancer research as a priority
3838 of great importance; now, therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
4040 Legislature, hereby recognize September 2019 as Prostate Cancer
4141 Awareness Month and encourage Texans to seek out more information
4242 about prostate cancer.
