5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The state's highest accolade for excellence in the |

6 | 6 | | arts, designation as a Texas State Artist is conferred on those |

7 | 7 | | individuals who represent the best of our rich and diverse |
---|
8 | 8 | | artistic community and who inspire others through their unique |
---|
9 | 9 | | creative expression; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Emmy Pérez, author of the poetry collections With |
---|
11 | 11 | | the River on Our Face and Solstice, is the 2020 State Poet |
---|
12 | 12 | | Laureate; after growing up in Santa Ana, California, she has |
---|
13 | 13 | | spent the past 18 years of her life in Texas border communities; |
---|
14 | 14 | | she currently resides in McAllen and works as a professor of |
---|
15 | 15 | | creative writing at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, |
---|
16 | 16 | | where she also serves as associate director for the Center for |
---|
17 | 17 | | Mexican American Studies; a member of the Macondo Writers |
---|
18 | 18 | | Workshop for socially engaged writers, she additionally serves |
---|
19 | 19 | | on the organizing committee for the CantoMundo national workshop |
---|
20 | 20 | | for Latin American poets; her work has earned her several poetry |

21 | 21 | | fellowships, and it has been featured on the Poetry Foundation |

28 | 28 | | father and grandfather in 2005; after exploring western swing |

29 | 29 | | with the Marshall Ford Swing Band, she branched out into jazz, |

30 | 30 | | country, folk, and pop with Warren Hood and the Goods; in 2014, |

31 | 31 | | she signed on with the Grammy Award-winning band Asleep at the |

32 | 32 | | Wheel, performing with the group on Austin City Limits and |

39 | 39 | | Hudnall Jr., a photographer whose work has focused on documenting |

40 | 40 | | the daily lives of African Americans in Houston's Third, Fourth, |

41 | 41 | | and Fifth Wards; born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Mr. Hudnall |

42 | 42 | | moved to Houston to study at Texas Southern University after |

43 | 43 | | serving in the United States Marines during the Vietnam War; he |

44 | 44 | | was subsequently hired to photograph communities that were |
---|
45 | 45 | | impacted by the federal Model Cities program, a component of |

46 | 46 | | President Lyndon B. Johnson's War on Poverty, and the experience |
---|
47 | 47 | | greatly influenced his development as an artist; his photographs |
---|
48 | 48 | | have been exhibited in museums and galleries around the country, |
---|
49 | 49 | | as well as in such major collections as the Smithsonian American |
---|
50 | 50 | | Art Museum and the National Museum of African American History |

51 | 51 | | and Culture; and |

52 | 52 | | WHEREAS, Named the 2020 State Three-Dimensional Artist, |

53 | 53 | | Gabriel Dawe is a native of Mexico City who, through his work with |

54 | 54 | | textiles, attempts to examine the complex construction of gender |
---|
55 | 55 | | and identity in Mexico and to subvert modern-day notions of |
---|
56 | 56 | | masculinity and machismo; he creates immersive, site-specific |
---|
57 | 57 | | installations, and his works have been displayed at numerous |
---|
58 | 58 | | exhibitions and collections at the Contemporary Arts Museum |
---|
59 | 59 | | Houston, the Toledo Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art |
---|
60 | 60 | | Museum, and other institutions; Mr. Dawe moved to Dallas to |

61 | 61 | | pursue his master of fine arts degree at The University of Texas |

62 | 62 | | at Dallas in 2008, and he was recently honored with the school's |

63 | 63 | | Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2018; and |

65 | 65 | | prestigious posts have all greatly contributed to the vibrant |

66 | 66 | | cultural life of the Lone Star State, and Texas is indeed |

67 | 67 | | fortunate to be home to these talented individuals; now, |

69 | 69 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
