11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 456
22 WHEREAS, The Texas Commission on the Arts has announced the
33 2020 appointments for State Poet Laureate, State Musician, State
44 Two-Dimensional Artist, and State Three-Dimensional Artist; and
55 WHEREAS, The state's highest accolade for excellence in the
66 arts, designation as a Texas State Artist is conferred on those
77 individuals who represent the best of our rich and diverse
88 artistic community and who inspire others through their unique
99 creative expression; and
1010 WHEREAS, Emmy Pérez, author of the poetry collections With
1111 the River on Our Face and Solstice, is the 2020 State Poet
1212 Laureate; after growing up in Santa Ana, California, she has
1313 spent the past 18 years of her life in Texas border communities;
1414 she currently resides in McAllen and works as a professor of
1515 creative writing at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley,
1616 where she also serves as associate director for the Center for
1717 Mexican American Studies; a member of the Macondo Writers
1818 Workshop for socially engaged writers, she additionally serves
1919 on the organizing committee for the CantoMundo national workshop
2020 for Latin American poets; her work has earned her several poetry
2121 fellowships, and it has been featured on the Poetry Foundation
2222 website, in Poem-a-Day by the Academy of American Poets, and in a
2323 host of poetry anthologies; and
2424 WHEREAS, Singer and pianist Emily Gimble has been selected
2525 as the 2020 State Musician; a third-generation musician, she
2626 began performing on stage when she was only seven years old, and
2727 she went on to record an album, A Case of the Gimbles, with her
2828 father and grandfather in 2005; after exploring western swing
2929 with the Marshall Ford Swing Band, she branched out into jazz,
3030 country, folk, and pop with Warren Hood and the Goods; in 2014,
3131 she signed on with the Grammy Award-winning band Asleep at the
3232 Wheel, performing with the group on Austin City Limits and
3333 recording a duet with one of her idols, Merle Haggard; her debut
3434 solo album, Certain Kinda, was released in 2017, and she
3535 continues to tour on her own, with her family band, and with other
3636 artists; she has received acclaim from the Austin Music Awards as
3737 the "Best Keyboards" in the city in 2013, 2014, 2018, and 2019; and
3838 WHEREAS, The 2020 State Two-Dimensional Artist is Earlie
3939 Hudnall Jr., a photographer whose work has focused on documenting
4040 the daily lives of African Americans in Houston's Third, Fourth,
4141 and Fifth Wards; born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Mr. Hudnall
4242 moved to Houston to study at Texas Southern University after
4343 serving in the United States Marines during the Vietnam War; he
4444 was subsequently hired to photograph communities that were
4545 impacted by the federal Model Cities program, a component of
4646 President Lyndon B. Johnson's War on Poverty, and the experience
4747 greatly influenced his development as an artist; his photographs
4848 have been exhibited in museums and galleries around the country,
4949 as well as in such major collections as the Smithsonian American
5050 Art Museum and the National Museum of African American History
5151 and Culture; and
5252 WHEREAS, Named the 2020 State Three-Dimensional Artist,
5353 Gabriel Dawe is a native of Mexico City who, through his work with
5454 textiles, attempts to examine the complex construction of gender
5555 and identity in Mexico and to subvert modern-day notions of
5656 masculinity and machismo; he creates immersive, site-specific
5757 installations, and his works have been displayed at numerous
5858 exhibitions and collections at the Contemporary Arts Museum
5959 Houston, the Toledo Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art
6060 Museum, and other institutions; Mr. Dawe moved to Dallas to
6161 pursue his master of fine arts degree at The University of Texas
6262 at Dallas in 2008, and he was recently honored with the school's
6363 Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2018; and
6464 WHEREAS, The artists who have been selected to hold these
6565 prestigious posts have all greatly contributed to the vibrant
6666 cultural life of the Lone Star State, and Texas is indeed
6767 fortunate to be home to these talented individuals; now,
6868 therefore, be it
6969 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
7070 Legislature, hereby congratulate the 2020 Texas Commission on
7171 the Arts honorees and extend to them sincere best wishes for
7272 continued fulfillment in their creative endeavors.
