2	2	WHEREAS, An unforgettable moment in Texas sports history
3	3	took place on November 1, 2017, when the Houston Astros won the
4	4	World Series, becoming the first team from the Lone Star State to
5	5	hoist the trophy as the champions of Major League Baseball; and
6	6	WHEREAS, After an exceptional regular season and victories
7	7	in the Division and League Championship Series, Houston met the
8	8	Los Angeles Dodgers in the Fall Classic; it proved one of the most
9	9	exciting showdowns in recent World Series history, with the two
10	10	clubs battling one another through seven hard-fought contests;
11	11	Games 2 and 5 were particularly thrilling, filled with home runs
12	12	and dramatic shifts in momentum, and in both cases, the Astros
13	13	ultimately prevailed; finally, with the teams deadlocked at
14	14	three wins apiece, Houston took charge early in the decisive Game
15	15	7 and earned the mantle of world champions with a 5-1 victory; and
16	16	WHEREAS, The team's run through the postseason was all the
17	17	more special in that it provided a much-needed boost for
18	18	residents of Houston and the Gulf Coast area, who were grappling
19	19	with the immense destruction inflicted by Hurricane Harvey in
20	20	late August 2017; wearing jerseys emblazoned with a special "H
21	21	Strong" patch, the Astros served as a source of inspiration for
22	22	millions of Texans by overcoming all obstacles to achieve their
23	23	championship goal; and
24	24	WHEREAS, A versatile ball club featuring a wealth of
25	25	talented players, the 2017 Astros were put together by owner Jim
26	26	Crane and general manager Jeff Luhnow, and the team was guided by
27	27	manager A. J. Hinch; while all members of the roster contributed
28	28	to the title quest, several were recognized with prestigious
29	29	honors for their superb play; José Altuve was named the American
30	30	League Most Valuable Player for his season-long excellence,
31	31	George Springer became the World Series MVP after smashing five
32	32	home runs against the Dodgers, and pitcher Justin Verlander was
33	33	selected as the League Championship Series MVP for his
34	34	spectacular work in helping Houston clinch the AL pennant; the
35	35	list of the other players who earned a special place in the hearts
36	36	of the Astros faithful is too long to mention, but such indelible
37	37	moments as Alex Bregman's game-winning hit in the 10th inning of
38	38	Game 5 and Charlie Morton's lights-out pitching performance to
39	39	finish off Los Angeles in Game 7 will be cherished in the Lone
40	40	Star State for decades to come; and
41	41	WHEREAS, In its finest moments, sports provides a means to
42	42	bring people together; the Houston Astros' World Series triumph,
43	43	coming in the wake of a devastating natural disaster, helped
44	44	unite Texans while also furthering the state's proud legacy of
45	45	athletic excellence, and all those associated with this
46	46	achievement may reflect with pride on a job well done; now,
47	47	therefore, be it
48	48	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
49	49	Legislature, hereby congratulate the Houston Astros on winning
50	50	the 2017 Major League Baseball World Series and extend to the
51	51	team's players, coaches, and staff sincere best wishes for
52	52	continued success; and, be it further
53	53	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
54	54	prepared for the Astros organization as an expression of high
55	55	regard by the Texas Senate.
