55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Judge Austin McCloud, a revered judicial
77 leader who died November 30, 2018, at the age of 89; and
88 WHEREAS, Born March 17, 1929, in Edom, Texas, Austin
99 McCloud was a beloved citizen and a distinguished legal scholar
1010 who left an indelible mark on the courts of Texas during a long
1111 and celebrated career on the bench; and
1212 WHEREAS, Austin McCloud earned a bachelor of business
1313 administration degree from Texas Tech University in 1951; he went
1414 on to serve with distinction as a member of the United States Air
1515 Force during the Korean War, and he returned to his home state to
1616 earn his juris doctorate degree from Baylor University; and
1717 WHEREAS, He worked for several years as an attorney in
1818 Houston and Colorado City, and he ascended to the bench in 1963,
1919 when he was appointed district judge of the 32nd District Court
2020 of Texas; he was elected chief justice of the 11th District Court
2121 of Civil Appeals in November of 1970, and he retired on
2222 December 31, 1994, after 24 years of meritorious service; and
2323 WHEREAS, Described as a giant in the Texas Judiciary, Chief
2424 Justice McCloud was a leader among his colleagues, and his
2525 skillfully drafted opinions were considered to be among the likes
2626 of those written by a number of famous judicial heavyweights; he
2727 shared his keen knowledge of the law through continuous and
2828 thoughtful mentorship, and his expertise was invaluable to the
2929 many professional associations in which he served; and
3030 WHEREAS, Judge McCloud shared a full and rewarding life
3131 with his beloved wife, Mary Anne McCloud; they contributed
3232 greatly to their community, and they gave generously of their
3333 time to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and to Polo on the
3434 Prairie; they were blessed with two daughters, six
3535 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren; and
3636 WHEREAS, Austin McCloud was a spirited and captivating
3737 storyteller who was widely known for his sharp wit, his
3838 infectious smile, and his warmth and kindness; he was a treasured
3939 citizen of the Lone Star State, and his contributions to the
4040 Texas Judiciary will continue to have a positive impact for years
4141 to come; now, therefore, be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
4343 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4444 family of Judge Austin McCloud; and, be it further
4545 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4646 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4747 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4848 memory of Austin McCloud.
