2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	recognize Karen Uhlenbeck, who has been honored with the 2019
4	4	Abel Prize, one of the highest international awards in the field
5	5	of mathematics; and
6	6	WHEREAS, The Abel Prize recognizes contributions to the
7	7	field of mathematics that are of extraordinary depth and
8	8	influence; the prestigious award is administered by the
9	9	Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters and presented annually
10	10	by the King of Norway; and
11	11	WHEREAS, Karen Uhlenbeck is a professor emerita of
12	12	mathematics at The University of Texas at Austin, where she
13	13	conducted research for more than 30 years; she currently serves
14	14	as a visiting senior research scholar at Princeton University and
15	15	as a visiting associate at the Institute for Advanced Study; and
16	16	WHEREAS, Karen's seminal research and pioneering
17	17	achievements are considered to be among the most important in the
18	18	field of mathematics, and her work has revolutionized geometric
19	19	analysis and led to fundamental advances at the intersection of
20	20	mathematics and physics; she is noted for her pioneering work in
21	21	geometric partial differential equations, gauge theory, and
22	22	integrable systems, and her groundbreaking insights have
23	23	implications across a broad range of fascinating subjects,
24	24	including string theory and the geometry of space-time; and
25	25	WHEREAS, Karen Uhlenbeck is a trailblazing leader in her
26	26	field and the first woman to be honored with an Abel Prize; she
27	27	has gained international acclaim for her transformative research
28	28	and for generously mentoring future generations of
29	29	mathematicians, and she is truly an inspiration to many; now,
30	30	therefore, be it
31	31	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
32	32	Legislature, hereby commend Karen Uhlenbeck for her outstanding
33	33	contributions to the field of mathematics and extend to her
34	34	congratulations on her selection for the 2019 Abel Prize; and, be
35	35	it further
36	36	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
37	37	her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
