11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 510
22 WHEREAS, Residents of Rains County are visiting Austin on
33 April 12, 2019, to celebrate Rains County Day at the State
44 Capitol; and
55 WHEREAS, Situated between Lake Tawakoni and Lake Fork
66 Reservoir, Rains County is blessed with an abundant water supply
77 and fertile soil characteristic of the Blackland Prairie region;
88 the county was formed in the late 1800s from Hopkins, Hunt, and
99 Wood Counties and named in honor of Emory Rains, an early pioneer
1010 who served in the Congress of the Republic of Texas; and
1111 WHEREAS, Rains County initially prospered as an agricultural
1212 and ranching center and today enjoys a diverse economy that
1313 includes oil production, manufacturing, and tourism; and
1414 WHEREAS, The county seat, Emory, which was originally
1515 known as Springville, is now the county's largest town; it is
1616 home to the annual Eagle Fest celebration held in the winter,
1717 when the area lakes are the home of many American bald eagles and
1818 other rare birds; and
1919 WHEREAS, The city of Point was incorporated in the 1960s
2020 and is recognized as the birthplace of the National Farmers
2121 Union; the 10 founding fathers of the union are memorialized by a
2222 historical monument in the city, which incorporates a statue of
2323 the union's founder, Isaac Newton Gresham, and a display of the
2424 flags of the NFU's member states; and
2525 WHEREAS, The county's newest municipality, East Tawakoni,
2626 was incorporated in 1967; this resort area offers residents the
2727 benefits of a relaxed rural community while providing easy access
2828 to Dallas; notably, the city is connected to its counterpart,
2929 West Tawakoni in Hunt County, by Two-Mile Bridge; completed in
3030 2016, this impressive structure replaced the original Two-Mile
3131 Bridge, which was built across Lake Tawakoni in 1959 and was the
3232 longest bridge serving a farm-to-market road at the time of its
3333 construction; and
3434 WHEREAS, One of the smallest counties in the state, but one of
3535 the fastest growing in the nation, Rains County is indeed playing a
3636 vital role in the story of the Lone Star State, and its citizens are
3737 indeed deserving of special recognition; now, therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
3939 Legislature, hereby recognize April 12, 2019, as Rains County Day
4040 at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere
4141 best wishes for a meaningful and memorable stay in Austin.
